Given that the theme of this DC film is classical music, it makes sense to hear some very calming and serene music. However, this film did more for us than just provide that; it also featured resonant passages of two very different classics: "Amazing Grace" and "Ave Maria," both of which were expertly and naturally sung by a young, gorgeous, young woman with impeccable pitch. Additionally, despite the fact that something terrible and horrible is happening outside of that stunning performance, the music in this film manages to seem even more delightful. In a nutshell, there's classical music with a BOOM in this film!
The film centers on a series of bombings connected to a prestigious music academy and a grand concert hall. As Conan investigates, he discovers that the culprit's motives lie in professional rivalry, betrayal, and the pursuit of perfection in art. The use of music as both theme and weapon gives the film a unique identity within the series, with tension heightened by the recurring motif of sound-whether in the blast of an explosion or the precision of a perfect pitch.
Analytically, the film excels in atmosphere, skillfully juxtaposing the refinement of classical performance with the brutality of crime. It also explores themes of obsession, pride, and the destructive lengths to which ambition can drive individuals. However, the execution falters in its overreliance on dramatic spectacle: while the musical backdrop is creative, the central mystery feels straightforward, with limited misdirection or complexity in the culprit's reveal. Character dynamics, particularly Ran's emotional connection to music and Conan's ingenuity, provide warmth, but the film does not reach the narrative sophistication of the franchise's strongest entries.
Rating: 6/10 - stylish and memorable for its musical theme, Full Score of Fear delivers suspense and spectacle, though its mystery plays on familiar notes without achieving full dramatic resonance.
They tell Conan's backstory and I actually really appreciate it here, because it actually ends up being pretty relevant at the end when he talks about what he used to do as Shinichi before he took on this Conan persona. It's interesting to see him actually get attacked and knocked unconscious by the villain. I just came back from a Church that had these giant musical instruments, so maybe I'm just in the mood for that. I believe this is the longest of all the Detective Conan movies. While not the most epic thing out there, still good. Hopefully these will be dubbed someday. ***
