If I was lukewarm about the first episode. At least the second episode does show the genesis of the kind of man Magnus Pym becomes.

Young Magnus (Benedict Taylor) is introduced to Baroness Weber by his father Rick. She is a wealthy socialite fallen on hard times.

With the help of Rick, she can get some of her late husband's fortune back. It will be lucrative for Rick.

Magnus accompanies Baroness Weber to Berne in Switzerland. She runs up a large hotel bill and disappears with the money.

Leaving Magnus to clean up the mess. Rick cannot be reached in England.

Seemingly abandoned, Magnus gets a scholarship to study law at a university in Bern. Just like his father, telling tall stories, upgrading his status brings him to the attention of Jack Brotherhood (Alan Howard) who is a professor and a British intelligence officer.

To Jack, Magnus is just the kind of person to feed him information about left wing students. Magnus learns his first lessons on betrayal.

Like other Le Carre adaptations, this is a slow burn series, but not quite the level of Tinker Tailor so far.
