The calm before the storm

March 2003. The US and its allies are poised to invade Iraq. Part of the massive force straining at the leash is the US 1st Marine Reconnaissance Battalion, the spearhead of the US 1st Marine Division's drive into Iraq. We meet some of the personnel in the battalion.

An excellent start to an excellent series. Very little action in this episode as the events largely take place shortly before the invasion of Iraq. However, this doesn't make it any less interesting. We meet the main characters of the series and these are interesting and engaging.

Aiding the engagement is some great, snappy dialogue and some great humour. The dynamics of the battalion, and of the US military in general, are also explored.

Trivia
The scenes of Iraqis surrendering and being turned away was shot near Walvis Bay Airport, and filming was constantly stopping and starting over because of interference from planes landing. The train track at the location was also much busier than the filmmakers had been led to believe.

Goofs
During the wind storm Sgt. Colbert walks around between the tents with sand and debris blowing all around, yet his T-shirt stays smooth and doesn't move.
