Reilly courted Margaret in the previous episode while she was married to an elderly clergyman.
The elderly clergyman conveniently died and now Margaret is with Reilly. It is believed that the real life Reilly murdered the clergyman so he can have Margaret's money that she will inherit.
Now Margaret is holed up in Port Arthur (China) and very much on her own. She has an affair with another man as Reilly looks for opportunities for danger and making money.
Reilly puts himself in danger by helping the Japanese in the impending Russo-Japanese War by giving them plans of the Russian minefields in the harbour. The penalty for getting caught is death by crucifixion.
As General Stoessel has little use of Reilly's information, Reilly makes use of his time by enriching himself by amassing coal, lumber and other stocks which would come into use during war.
David Suchet plays Inspector Tsientsin. A foot soldier who is on to Reilly.
It is another episode where you have extensive location shooting. There is intrigue however there is also too much talking. This was never an exciting action packed drama that it was promoted to be. There is some good pyrotechnics at the end of the episode.
