She died after working her shift at a restaurant. She was die to go to college soon in LA.
The police think that Melanie was killed by her no good boyfriend, a known troublemaker to Sheriff McAllister (Xander Berkeley.)
Jane thinks the death was accidental. There is a serial killer being attracted to redheads and will strike again soon.
You can see the maverick side of Jane here. Using hypnosis to make one witness talk. There are a few red herrings such as a suspicious looking law enforcement officer.
The reveal was a bit of a surprise but works for what is in essence the second episode.
"Red Hair and Silver Tape" is a good episode of "The Mentalist", with a storyline with many plot points. The duel of opinions between Jane and Lisbon is excellent; but Jane's sixth sense is the greatest attraction of this show that has also funny situations with Wayne Rigsby, Grace Van Pelt and Kimball Cho. My vote is seven.

- Quotes
Patrick Jane: I have a daughter about your age, if I hadn't caused her death. Her and her mother.
Frankie O'Keefe: How?
Patrick Jane: Out of arrogance. Stupidity. I made an evil man very angry and he killed them to make me sorry for what I'd done. And I am sorry. Being sorry is a far worse punishment than being dead, everybody dies. Very few people ever feel truly sorry for the bad things they've done.
