The Jones family moves into an upscale community and everything seems perfect, but this family has an agenda.
And, they say there is nothing new under the sun. HA ! Just wait until you see this story. It's more than just keeping up with the Joneses. Much more. A new twist has been added. Maybe it was just a matter of time before we saw something like this, but the wait is over. It's here now.
When I first watched the first few minutes in the beginning, I was wary. Hey, I remember The STING and I said, "Con." But, I was wrong. It's not that. Not exactly.
The acting performances by Duchovny and Moore are seamless. Their performances are so understated and honest that you buy into and enjoy everything. Nothing is overdone. The dialogues by all the cast are also seamless and honest. No really uncomfortable moments. You know something is wrong with this family, but what? Oh, you do find out early on and when you know, then you need to see how it ends. But, after that, everything ran smoothly and I kept asking myself, "what could go wrong? what could go wrong?" And, of course, something does.
Violence: No. Sex: Not really, you just hear the sounds Nudity: Yes, briefly in the beginning. Sexual content: Yes. Teenage drinking: Yes. Language: Yes.

Could this really happen? Maybe not, but the consequences of today's, "The one who dies with the most toys wins!" attitude are shown to great effect in this film. Previous reviewers have said the acting wasn't up to much but I disagree and was glued to the screen all the way through. I'm amazed that The Joneses wasn't marketed more, I never saw any press about it and as a regular cinema goer definitely would have paid my eight quid. Maybe no explosions, mentions of terrorism or national security doomed it to DVD release in the UK. Not a comedy, not a thriller but something between which was sometimes dark and at others hilarious. I felt myself connecting with the main characters which, as a Brit, I don't often do in American films. Overall a good film (hence 7 out of 10) and worth ninety five minutes of your time.

i watched this movie purely because i like David Duchovny as an actor and because i think Demi Moore is the most attractive woman i've ever seen. this movie was kind of weird when it first started out but you quickly catch on that their life is way too perfect to be real. it was actually better than i thought it was going to be with a real felt message that there is more to life than material things. I'm a marketing student and the real scary part of the movie is when i realized that this could actually happen, in fact it does already in a way with celebrities and famous athletes getting paid to wear and use certain products just to make others want to go buy them. overall this movie was a 7 with an ending that will make you smile.
The Joneses - Steve and Kate and teenaged children Jenn and Mick - move into a suburban neighbourhood and seem the perfect family. Good-looking, successful, trend-setting, engaging - they seem to have it all and are the model family. However, all this is a façade and hides an astonishing secret.
Good film that had the potential to be brilliant. The central anti-consumerist theme was great. The ambush marketing-type concept was very original, and plausible. The movie was set up to be in the league of American Beauty in terms of edgy, clever commentary on modern life, but then lost focus, pulled its punches and ended rather tamely.
A good story nonetheless with a solid cast.

The movie is quiet good actually.. Touching some topics as morality of stealth marketing, fake life, romance, friendship over money, excessive focus on money, status, keeping up with the Joneses...
It is not exactly my type of movies( (too romantic).. also I do not really feel this push to keep buying luxury goods.. So I am not a primary target group, but for those who are, they may love it!

I saw The Joneses at the Camera Cinema Club in San Jose without knowing anything about it going in. You don't know at first what's going on, but something seems off with the Joneses, who have just moved to an affluent community, and seem to have all the latest and most fashionable goodies.
After you find out what's happening, the premise becomes clear and a very clever and thought-provoking premise it is. Unfortunately, the movie doesn't have the courage of its convictions and what I see as basically a horror movie, becomes more standard Hollywood fare. The writer and director was at the showing, and it became clear that he had to make a lot of compromises on what was originally an edgy script, to get the movie made.
I still enjoyed it because of the acting, direction, and production values, but thought the ending was a real disappointment, considering how the movie began.

I read the short summary on IMDb about this, it really didn't say anything about the movie, I read somewhere else that it was a comedy and it had a good story, but again not giving me insight to the story. Not really knowing what this film was about, I started watching and after about 15 minutes your in the loop of things, its elaborated through out the movie and in some cases it's really good and refreshing to see this who-is-cheating-who-and-making- money-on-it kind of strange film.
I thought it was funny to see Duchovny in this, I'm kinda sexy but doesn't really know how to handle this setup. I think Duchovny and Moore has a good partnership and they play their roles very well, from start to finish they change characters, not in a unexpected way, but in a regular to romantic-comedy's kind of way.
It's a good movie and a good concept, one that maybe could have been done better, it's not a bad result at all, but I wasn't hundred percent entertained.

This is a serious comedy, or a dark satire if you like. Caricature if the perfect family of four. Rich, happy, successful, no less than three Audi's in the drive way, a wast wardrobe to choose from, all wearing Gucci and Rolex, playing golf, moving into a prosperous neighborhood. Not easy to be they neighbors. Are their life really that perfect? Are they just keeping up the appearances? You bet!
The cast is doing great, well instructed, which makes this a more interesting comedy than I thought it was. Not your average Hollywood comedy garbage. This is well worth a watch, and gives certain perspectives.
I like the lace of the film. It's sleek, good soundtrack, well balanced effects, really appealing. A great comedy about the modern consumer society and what makes it tick. Addiction to the newest, to the need for a perfect life.

I think it's no small feat for a Hollywood movie to raise issues like consumerism and how we are subtly manipulated into buying very expensive stuff we don't really need. Not sure if the kind of marketing shown in the movie exists in the real world, but if it doesn't exist as such, probably quite a few variations are already there.
Of course, this is still a Hollywood movie, so the whole theme has to be somehow tamed for general consumption; you get David Duchovny as a lonely old guy craving for a family (wasn't he getting treatment for sex addiction in real life? a bit ironic...), Demi Moore as a career-minded woman, some romance, some moral doubts from the main characters... A bit like the fictional plot in "The Player" that starts as a real drama and ends up as a blockbuster with Bruce Willis and Kim Basinger.
Still, I think the movie manages to balance OK between serious matter and the usual Hollywood ingredients and clichés.

I've never heard of this before; it's quite brilliant, and certainly better than I thought it would be. Why is it that when there finally comes a different movie, different from all the rest of the cliché crap, it doesn't get much attention? It's such a clever way to market new products, but everyone always seems to forget the nature of humans and their feelings. That's why I'm amazed at the work of actors; some slip through and get together, but the rest for the most part can have no feelings for a person, but make it look otherwise. I guess that's what you call just business - and of course things go awry. This was a very fun movie to watch. I doubt anyone would guess the ending, but that's just me maybe. I highly recommend this fun- filled movie; it just might tell you what family really is.

Not really of course. This is anything but a conventional family movie. Saying more would be a spoiler (at least in my book), but let me tell you that if you like wicked social commentary, you will also like this movie. It is also nice to see Demi Moore in a role that requires her to act, with David Duchovny doing his thing. The whole concept is really well though of.
It's not a perfect movie by all means of course, but I personally liked the humor in it (even if understated). Try not to read too much about the actual story though (as I stated above) and watch it with a free mind, to get the full effect of the movie
