Nothing to see here. It's predictable in that it has no story (as I suppose is how these movies are) but even still, I think some plot worth more than a dime would be have been suffice. I don't think the gore to be honest is all that much from what I can see...I know for some it would be too much but I wasn't impressed nor grossed out. To me, Hostel does about the same, in smaller amounts but more stylishly. This movie gets a zero for style points...any sense of character development is simply plodding. There's no real direction or purpose here. A cut here, a nip there...the implausible, downright comical escape which seems (pardon the pun) a complete detachment from the rest of the 'so called' movie. I'd say the ending only serves its purpose in that it finally puts this film out of its misery as well as its disappointment viewers.

A doctor with sickening and depraved needs kidnaps a teenage couple and forces them to play his depraved game of physical and psychological torment and agony, whilst constantly teasing them with promises of eventual survival and release.
This film will no doubt stimulate debate, particularly In the 'English speaking world', as to what Is acceptable In movies and what Isn't (Japanese cinema Isn't very well represented outside of Japan, so the current and most popular genres of modern Japanese cinema are largely unknown to the outside world). How this film passed the censors Is beyond me, yet 'Grotesque' Is apparently available to buy and rent In most countries. It has very realistic scenes of male and female rape and the most terrible kinds of torture Imaginable. The whole thing has only the three characters and apart from the opening scenes, we never go beyond a couple of rooms throughout the whole movie. If you enjoy extreme physical & psychological torture, then this Is certainly the film for you. Sadly, there's no story to It - we just watch the agony of the two Innocent kids!

Well well, the campaign for this flick was well chosen. The movie came straight from Japan and was stated as Banned In The UK. For the geeks out there that made us remind of the banned list of the video nasties so every geek wanted to catch this flick. And indeed, it was banned in some countries and it became OOP almost everywhere. But was it the hype worth waiting for. Yes and no, also on the cover they compared it with Saw and Hostel. Well, it had nothing to do with the torture devices in Saw and also nothing to do with the storyline of Saw. It was closer with Hostel but still it's Japanese so it couldn't be compared with that flick too. They also stated that it was in the tradition of the Guinea Pig series. Again, yes and no. Yes, indeed, the gore and torture is brutal but no, it wasn't supposed to be a snuff flick. But again, it is Japanese so for us coming from the States or Europe it is a bit hard to understand it all. Remember Imprint, the gore and effects were all in tact but somehow the storyline was confusing for us all. The head appearing suddenly was for some the reason to hate the storyline. Here we have the same, at the end of the flick again some typical Japanese twist appears. But I can guarantee you that this film isn't for the squeamish ones or the ones with a weak hart. The scene's are explicit and brutal. Let's say that this is August Underground from Japan. Do I need to say more...
If you like your western offerings of Hostel, Saw or Green Inferno, then this will right up your alleyway.
This Japanese version has little offer in the way of story, however, the horrible, manipulative way that our 'Doctor' tortures our couple on the worst first date ever is both impressive and sickening in equal measure. He gives them hope and takes it away in the next breath.
If you can stand the horrible show, then it's does have at least something to offer. However, most viewers will either not bother or walk away from the relentless horror.

Grotesque runs on a stripped-down engine, a bare set, surgical lights, and a relentless focus that dares you to look away. I appreciated the brutal minimalism, the way the camera stays steady while the score buzzes like a fluorescent bulb. A few images are memorable in their severity, and the commitment to a single, suffocating space gives the movie a harsh rhythm that feels intentional, not accidental.
The trouble is purpose. It treats agony like content, circling shock without much curiosity about people, power, or why this cruelty exists. There is a faint critique of audiences who crave extremes, yet the film often feels trapped in the same marketplace it could be questioning. For extreme horror completists, the craft shows, but for me the experience stayed numbing, a harsh exercise that left little to carry out of the theater.

Yeah I'm not sure I'd want to hang with whoever had the mind behind this piece of... something.
It really is as advertised. Completely grotesque. Like when you hear torture porn you think of maybe like hostel 2. Martyrs. That vibe. But this is just vile. It's like chuck palahniuk and Gaspar noe find 4chan and take PCP. This truly did not need to exist. And if it really did for someone out there, just make it a manga because this had no class. No camp.
Plus, these victims barely scream and are awake for aggressively impossible lengths of time despite their injuries. And their injuries are so aggressively sadistic; beyond anything a human imagination should ever dare to explore. I mean... seriously it's not just sick, it's legitimately concerning whoever came up with a couple of these takes.
Im not a prude. I like gnarly stuff, but have some dignity, for you-know-what's sake. All the sexual assault and rape was just so sick. And not like in irreversible where that sort of scene has its 'place' in cinema. This should have remained in the imagination and then therapy should have been sought out.
All that said, I'm rating it mid, not low because I haven't seen anything like it. And the acting was exceptional from the main guy. I would absolutely never watch it again or recommend it. I don't think this had any business being made and I really wouldn't watch it even if you're someone who wants to watch more when people say that. I put this on with no info. Didn't look at anything but the title. So if you're looking into this one, just skip it. Put on Tokyo gore police or something.
