The Knotted Mess that is Cal Lightman

Another episode of Lie to Me, another brilliant performance by Tim Roth. He continues to prove why he was the perfect choice for the role of Dr. Lightman. Part arrogant, part brilliant, part introverted, part disturbed, the character of Lightman is becoming more and more of a knotted mess. His imperfection make him one of the most believable and striking on television. In this episode, we slowly piece together more and more about Lightman the man and his past. In a case that strikes awfully close to home, we see new parts to Lightman's part and a new layer to his character. But to every answered question, two new arrive, leaving us with one the most spelling binding ending of the season. In addition, Eli Loker takes in unimaginable step, adding a completely new twist to his character. The characters are taking shape, the plot and the mystery were as solid as ever. This is truly turning into a magnificent show.

    Suicides and Embezzlement

While driving his daughter Emily to school, there is a traffic jam and Dr. Lightman decides to find why. He learns from his acquaintance, the District Attorney Gail, that two Indian sisters have committed suicide from the same bridge within three days. He becomes obsessed and decides to investigate the reason for suiciding. Out of the blue, another Indian girl commits suicide on the subway, and he sees that the suicides are not coincidence. Meanwhile, Dr. Foster and Loker investigate a case of embezzlement of the money for pension plans committed by the millionaire Joseph Hollin. She finds that the man is innocent and his daughter Carolyn is the real thief and proposes a deal to him: he could assume the embezzlement provided he returned the money to the pensioners. In return, she would not accuse Carolyn. However, Loker disagrees with Foster's arrangements.

"Deprived Heart" is an episode of "Lie to Me" with two good segments. The obsession of Cal Lightman for suicides is explained to the viewers in the end of the episode. The way he obtains the confession of the disgusting Mike Personick is funny. In the other segment, the attitude of Loker may bring problems to him on the next episodes. My vote is eight.

Emily Lightman: Do you remember... that girl at my school who took all those pills and killed herself? I didn't really know her very well, but she was in my art class. And she used to paint these really colorful oil paintings. Just shapes, really. I wonder sometimes if anyone could have stopped her.

Dr. Cal Lightman: [Nods, very slightly]

      Emily Lightman: What?

      Dr. Cal Lightman: Nothing.

      [Gives her a hug]

Dr. Cal Lightman: You shouldn't think about that stuff.

Emily Lightman: What am I supposed to think about?

      Dr. Cal Lightman: Celibacy.
