The End in the Beginning

This is an alternate reality episode. Rather it's coming from Brennan or Booth or both, it's unclear. What is clear is that they both have deep feelings for each other.

For four years, the fans of Bones have been watching Booth and Brennan tip toe around their love for each other. The fans are given a trip with a "What if" episode. Booth and Brennan are married and own a night club. All the cast is there, but mixed up in roles. I found it interesting of who chose to be the bad guy - and can see either Booth or Brennan coming to this conclusion...

We've been waiting for these two to kiss ever since the Christmas episode in Season 3. Well, we got it!

This is easily in my top 5 episodes of Bones. I know some people aren't super huge fans of the whole 'Booth's coma' thing, but it's so fun! Zack makes a cameo, Bones and Booth are technically together, Sweets sings in a fedora, and Wendell is an overly loyal bouncer (insert heart eyes here). It's nice to see everyones faces on screen under different circumstances.

All our favorite characters are turned upside-down and inside out. The ep seems long winded with a lot of repeating info to get to the point but its not. The writers needed that time to not only draw the audience into the story but to reset character development from what we all know, in order to convince us of this "alt universe". What has taken 4 seasons, needed to be done in 48 min. Bits and pieces of the universe we have known are brought in to keep us connected. Its was brilliantly written. By the end, the audience has almost "forgotton" where the last ep ended. Then the ending whips us right back into reality... with an unexpected twist. Just like Booth, it seems so believable.

After reading negative comments about this season finale, I felt compelled to express my opinion.

This works. Period.

This is exactly what a good TV show does. The expectation that we get Booth/Bones together is what a series ending episode would look like. The anticipation, and anxiety surrounding this frustration lack of connection between the two is what makes a show like this work. We know they love one another, we know they WILL get together, and that is what keeps us tuning back.

They teased us this year by setting up the baby story, but just throwing the two into a donated sperm story so they can be together is not what fans want. So, they have to play it out. Now with this new twist in the story, it is another possible year of them teasing where Bones comes to grips with her love of Booth. Perfect storytelling.

I get the impression often that people are so desperate for these two, that they are willing to have the show taken off the air just to see these two kiss. That's the show killer.

"Who's the Boss" is a perfect example of this. 8 years of teasing, and they finally got together. Now that the suspense was over...the show ended a year later. No one wants to see them together, just in the process off. Maybe if they do it just right, a year together and then they keep going..but it will be a fantastic way to send the series.

But that is not for now...bring on Season 5.

One of the hallmarks of a great series is the ability to step back (or forward) and demonstrate a sense of humor about itself. Not that there isn't some dark humor in Bones (after all, if nothing else Shakespeare made that a must to disrupt tragedy/drama). In this episode every character slips neatly into an alter ego that matches their regular series character as slick as slick can be. This is a ride. You don't take an amusement park ride seriously, you just enjoy it for what it is: an escape from the daily grind. This episode is a fun house. The mirror distortions are just enough to make you smile; but if you are a regular viewer you know just as you get to the end you will find yourself once again in the "real" world of the series. And that is just what happens here. And who doesn't like Iceland?
