Revathi, Saiju Kurup, Shane Nigam, James Eliya, and Athira Patel in Bhoothakaalam (2022)

Review by Drarjunmenon

Bhoothakaalam

10/10

Take a note Hollywood, this is how you make a horror/thriller.

As an ardent follower of the horror/thriller genre, there's isn't anything that I haven't seen over the years.

Every modern day horror/thriller movie has become something of a recycled mess that tries to masquerade as an original idea/genre-defining-epic, but ultimately ends up looking like the rotten carcass that it was heavily "inspired" from.

So I had little to no expectations from this under-advertised movie and yet it managed to inflict a kind of gut-wrenching fear that many movies with tons of realistic CGI and millions of dollars in budget couldn't.

I won't spoil much as I'd advise you to watch this movie closely, this gem of a movie will leave an impression!

The subtleties alone makes it a beauty to behold!

Malayalam movie industry is still eons ahead of bollywood/everything else in India, Boothakaalam is a gentle reminder as to why it still remains the reigning champion.

Hats off to the director, cast and script writers for delivering a modern day spiritual successor (pun intended) to Malayalam films of the bygone era like Manichithrathazhu.

This will be a cult classic!
