  • Clean. Solid and thoroughly entertaining!

    Damn!

    That was refreshing and beautiful!

Can't really find any complaints whatsoever, the comedy was clean and well executed and the story was carried on smoothly till the last shot.

Stand out performance from the entire crew and especially the lead actors. This movie is a strong message to the industry that you don't need vulgarity or obscene double entendres to make the audience laugh. I was pleasantly surprised by the reception and the way story was executed despite having a predictable storyline.

This is one of the few occasions where I truly believe that Malayalam movie industry is pushing in the right direction.

  • "Tummbad* in a Tharavad.

A decent attempt to make Tummbad in a traditional Kerala household setting, which unfortunately ended up becoming a cheap replica of the original, with a few redeeming qualities.

The visuals were enchanting but anyone who has seen Tummbad can make the connection within the opening act (my 5 yr old daughter could spot it by then.)

Shine Tom and Aishwarya were majestic but the Demigods were reminiscent of the 80's Hollywood creature-flick atrocities, which kind of made the final few shots unpalatable.

The movie has taken inspiration from a variety of sources but managed to incorporate them beautifully, the character development and atmosphere building were impeccable.

If it hadn't been for the lackluster climax, this would've been a spiritual successor to the genre defining cult classics like "Manichitrathazhu" and "Anandabhadram", alas, it wasn't to be.

If you haven't seen Tummbad, brace yourself for a memorable watch that will stay with you for a long time, both for it's aesthetics and pitiable climax sequences.

Overall, a decent attempt at recreating the on-screen magic of Tummbad.

  • Take a note Hollywood, this is how you make a horror/thriller.

As an ardent follower of the horror/thriller genre, there's isn't anything that I haven't seen over the years.

Every modern day horror/thriller movie has become something of a recycled mess that tries to masquerade as an original idea/genre-defining-epic, but ultimately ends up looking like the rotten carcass that it was heavily "inspired" from.

So I had little to no expectations from this under-advertised movie and yet it managed to inflict a kind of gut-wrenching fear that many movies with tons of realistic CGI and millions of dollars in budget couldn't.

I won't spoil much as I'd advise you to watch this movie closely, this gem of a movie will leave an impression!

The subtleties alone makes it a beauty to behold!

Malayalam movie industry is still eons ahead of bollywood/everything else in India, Boothakaalam is a gentle reminder as to why it still remains the reigning champion.

Hats off to the director, cast and script writers for delivering a modern day spiritual successor (pun intended) to Malayalam films of the bygone era like Manichithrathazhu.

This will be a cult classic!
