    Weak

I will hereby remove any Trailer Park Boys influence from my reviewing process and rate this show simply on it's own merit. I will forget that the guys behind 'Drunk and on Drugs Funtime Happy Hour' had helped produce one of the greatest recent comedy shows I have had the pleasure to watch. Because let's face it. The characters in Trailer Park Boys were perfect. They were an ensemble. They all mattered and they were all constructive to the overall quality of the show. I loved everything about the show, from Lahey's continual battle with alcohol and all things sexy, Ricky's take on the English language and his justification of skewed logic and the incredible creation of the character 'Bubbles' to even the most minor of roles. Phil Collins, Jacob, J-Roc, Ray, Trevor, Cory, Lucy, Sarah....they were all so important.

But with this new show there is nothing. Perhaps I just don't 'get it' or maybe I'm never high enough but the show is just poor all round. To those unaware of the plot, J.P, Rob and Mike (Julian, Ricky and Bubbles) are creating a new show but are constantly given some blue drugs created by Doctor Funtime. They get into a number of scrapes and are constantly on the run from a local mafia man and a knife wielding madman amongst other things. Inbetween this ridiculous plot are a number of...well, I suppose i'll call them 'subplots' for now. Basically, it's the boys dressed up as 'characters', much like 'Little Britain' or similar sketch comedy shows. I expect to most, what little humor there is to absorb from them would lie in their appearance. From fat disk jockeys to silly superheroes. There are all of the hallmarks of a costume budget gone wild. In between drugged dazes, the boys find themselves struggling to keep it together, whilst the television network tries in vain to keep on top of the show.

It might sound confusing or just stupid. But that is basically what you will be watching. There is little to laugh about here. A show like this can only work if the characters are watchable, humorous and absorbing. These characters are pointless, bland and definitely not watchable. There is no sign of cohesive plot, no apparent sign of comedy and pretty much nothing to keep you watching.

If a TPB fan is about to embark on this, please don't. You'll only be terribly disappointed. I imagine this is a show that can only have been produced whilst on drugs, yet I think even those higher than a boeng 747 will struggle to enjoy this show.

    A mild 3/10

    Pure comic genius.

This is undoubtedly the most original program for years. Not since the original SNL cast skits, Monty Python, League of Gentlemen has anything this outrageously creative come to pass. Surpasses Trailer Park Boys by far. Some of the jokes are very transparent, but, hey they had a time slot to fill--then there were the drugs! The various characters are brilliant, and Smith finally gets to shine.

Additionally, Maury Chaykin ("call me Potatoes, Potatoes O'Brien") in his final role, apparently being smuggled out of the hospital for the final scenes, then returned to the hospital where he passed away from terminal cancer the following day.

Genius, pure comic genius! But, if you haven't the slightest fondness of slap-stick, you may not enjoy this much. I'm puzzled why this is described as having 2 episodes when there are 6.

I hope we see something more from the Boys, it's been a while. Cheers 10 out of 10.

    Stands the test of time

It's been at least a decade since I've last seen this short series, which I had to rewatch immediately after finishing the first time around, and I find myself thinking about this show so frequently I found myself here today in 2025 to add to the positive review train.

The way the Boys play "themselves" as well as the majority of the wild characters is top notch, especially when the groups face off against each other with slapstick or argue and converse. (Not to take away from the fantastic support from Chaykin, Baruchel, Sedaris, as well as familiar favorites Pat Roach and the legendary John Dunsworth.)

Taking note of the criticisms of the literal drug-induced storyline, the overly raunchy serial jokes like Mike Smith dressed as a babushka doing naughty things to Robb and JP, and Mike (off camera), and the taboo choice to play over the top blackface/yellow face characters. In the same way as South Park played equal opportunity offense to everyone, the Boys intent is to be jarring not offensive in my opinion. It's all part of the absurd and meta nature of the show's concept.

Definitely appeals more to those that have been around recreational hallucinogenics or at least find the topic fascinating. And probably definitely best consumed while drunk and on drugs whether that's a beer and a smoke or root beer and sweets. It's only 6 episodes and it's some of the most unique content you'll have seen all year if not all decade.

I think everyone should see it at least once. Enjoy!

    Novel concept, ineffective execution.

This show boldly attempts to use a multitude of random sketch comedy bits to forward a singular story plot.

    They fail.

    Miserably.

There is a fine line in the world of comedy between ridiculous = FUNNY and ridiculous = STUPID, and this show doesn't just cross that line, it LEAPS across that line into the realm of stupid. Poor timing, poor transitions, and a lack of coherence all work against any potential comedy that may be developed in any given segment. While the individual characters created in each skit COULD indeed be developed into funny stand alone characters and comedy skits, the attempt to merge them into a running story line just doesn't work as executed.

Comedy is a hard genre to tackle, and while I applaud the attempt to mix a sketch comedy format with a running story line, the approach used in the show is simply not effective, and, frankly, not funny.

    2 of 10 stars.
