More no budget nonsense from Japan

BEACH VOLLEYBALL DETECTIVES 2 is very much a follow on from the first movie and I should imagine the two films were filmed back-to-back. Neither offers much in the way of entertainment value except to the most dedicated viewer of Japanese no-budget erotic cinema. This film sees the policewomen from the original come back in order to combat a terrorist threat. There's something of a greater international flavour to this film, with a volleyball competition including contestants from Russia, China, and the like, although the simple locations of a beach and a building remain the same as previously.

As before, female director Yumi Yoshiyuki makes sure to get lots of footage of the girls in bikinis playing volleyball, after all, that's what the male viewers will be looking for. A couple of more voluptuous actresses have been brought in to play opposing team members and their curves are captured in lingering slow-motion throughout. Of course, there's no nudity, the whole thing is just as tease. Elsewhere there are the usual cheesy computer effects and some absolutely awful CGI. One foreigner has stretching arms that brought to mind the Indian mystic in MASTER OF THE FLYING GUILLOTINE! Another moment sees the team girls striding down the beach in slow motion while a riff on THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY theme plays. It's ludicrous stuff but oddly endearing at the same time.

How to Make Beach Volleyball Boring Part 2.

Beach Volleyball Detectives - Part 2 follows on directly from Part 1 and, if anything, is even more boring since it repeats several scenes from the first film in their entirety. As before, the Beach Volleyball Detectives - Haruka, Wakana, Keiko, and Mitsuyo - try to prevent a group of terrorists (led by the mysterious Black Sun) from detonating a nuclear device, while taking time out to compete in the World Volleyball Tournament against other nations (who are all played by Japanese women).

It goes without saying (but I will anyway) that there's lot's of gratuitous shots of the girls jiggly bits as they bat the ball over the net, but once again this is rendered surprisingly dull by the weak direction, abysmal CGI, and general cheapness of the production. Sexy Haruka Ogura, who plays Haruka, is particularly appealing, and the other BVDs are pretty enough, but trust me when I say that that the film is no day at the beach, no matter how attractive the girls.

1.5 out of 10, rounded up to 2 for featuring a flying guillotine volleyball (albeit a reeaaallyy badly animated one).
