It's a staple of cop shows that first responders never know what they're walking into when they answer a call. And 'Fixing a Hole' is another exhibit for the court. In this case, the horrifying subject of child abuse is cleverly composed as a missing child case. those scars run deep for Cooper.
This is compelling from start to finish, whether it's Sammy's ever more confused situation with his partner's family, his own thirst for street justice, or Cooper's focused effort to find out where this kid came from. That avenue leads to an unbelievably sad end (and so does Sammy's) but it also offers serious character development on both fronts.
Geez, the writing on this show.
