Just as good, but harder to watch (emotionally)

To those uncertain about The Legend of Korra: watch it. It is every bit as good as the original Avatar series was. Set in a more modern world, the new avatar is faced with struggles of a different kind, struggles that relate more to our modern world. Technology is booming, crime is rising, and a revolution is awakening. This is much more real than the last series was.

The characters are built incredibly realistic, too. Korra is a revolutionary heroine: she is realistic, imperfect, hasty, rebellious... all the things that a teenager girl really would be. Faced with difficult decisions, she doesn't always choose the right ones, yet she always learns from them. The other characters also show these strenghts and weaknesses along with equal depth to the characters of The Last Airbender.

While different, troubled, and darker than the original, everyone should give The Legend of Korra a chance. It has many wonders to be seen as of yet and her story is only just beginning.

Not as good as the prequel, but still the best Animation in awhile

Legend of Korra appeals to be way more mature than its prequel: The Last Airbender. Whilst that gives an edge to Korra, it also removes that childish and innocent humor enveloped in rather serious conflict.

Still, do not be fooled - Legend of Korra is an impressive animation work; it goes flawlessly in graphic and motion design, it doesn't lack a humor nor a good, intriguing story. Korra is basically everything Aang wasn't: She's stubborn, hasty, inpatient and not as shy as Aang. I think they made quite a good move here since we already have three season with over twenty episodes to watch a mindful, calm and shy Aang. The gathering, or gang if you wish, are also kind a different. There's that innocent, teen "Love squared" as I like to call it which is more amusing than serious, though. Then there's again one "wisdomous" guy with only patience and non-conflict solution on his mind. There are also many others; lots and lots of different characters that you will surely enjoy in. It's actually still early to judge the show because it unravels itself episode by episode. As the more episodes are aired, the more you realize about the story of Republic City and all its mysteries.

To short the long talk, Legend of Korra is most likely more mature than the Last Airbender (which actually brings another question: if Tenzin is the Aang's only child (or so I understood), then there's only four (upcoming fifth) remaining Airbenders - We'll see), with not so much a childish humor (which is still there, don't worry) and a story which untangles really slowly and forces you to watch the show from episode to episode. If you loved the prequel, you'll love its sequel.

Gets better each episode

I enjoyed the previous series, "The Last Airbender," and I had been checking every month or so to see if the new "Legend of Korra" had been released yet. Yesterday I realized that five or six episodes had been released so I watched them all while typing up some notes for school. I have to say, the first couple of episodes I was pretty worried. Many of the characters seemed very harsh and unlikable. Yet, as I got to know them better, I really started to like them and enjoy the show. "Legend of Korra" is lacking the hilarity which made "Airbender" so fun to watch, yet it is replaced with more menace, intrigue, and (I want to use the adjective "page-turning") excitement. The bits of humor that are present are perfect and I think they have captured a good balance. I'm really hooked. 9/10. The one missing star is in case the show takes a turn for the worse.

This Is Not The LTA Part 2

LOK takes place 70 years after the TLA, with a new Avatar emerging in an ever changing world. Let me start by saying this is not the TLA part 2, while it exists in the same world, this is a brand new story filled with new characters. The show is very good in that sense, as while keeps the charm and environment of the TLA, it makes sure to change the world so we don't have a complete rehash of the same story. While the characters are good, especially the development of Korea herself as it becomes a true joy watching her change into a respectable Avatar. With the story Itself (with the exception of 1 or 2 things) is excellent and truly shows a new take on the Avatar. This is a series that you must watch if you liked TLA, and admittedly season 1 isn't where the series shines the brightest, but the coming seasons show why this is worthy of the Avatar name.

Excellent but a little rushed

For the most part I only started watching this because I wanted to see what the final outcome would be of the original series. But after watching the first season I was completely hooked and wanted more. The animation was absolutely stunning and the voices fit their characters extremely well. My only complaint is that the entire season felt rushed. Though it is understandable as it was originally only supposed to be a mini-series of twelve episodes. My only other complaint is that throughout the entire season they don't properly show how powerful Kora really is. While in the original series they showed is with Ang using the avatar state which I always enjoyed as I thought it was quite cool.

Overall definitely worth watching but it doesn't quite match up to the original series.

Wow

Let me just say, I was a fan of Avatar: The Last Airbender (mostly Earth and Fire) but Korra tops it without a doubt. The writers and creators have really grown and learned their art, and it shines through in this series. It's darker than it's predecessor, and the story is much more intriguing.

The main antagonist is Amon, a patient, cunning, and ruthless (supposed) non-bender that is leading a rebellion against the capital Republic City. His plot starts out as no more than an intriguing idea, but in the scenes where it shows him committing his deeds, they seem horrible, unspeakable and more than devilish. It pulls at the watcher more than many death scenes that have been produced.

Part of that is because of the empathy the viewer will quickly grow for the extremely well- written characters. Each character is starkly different, and each one has a past that comes into play in the story, some much more than others.

The main sell point for me on the series is the magnitude of the events. I've watched many T.V. shows and read many stories that had to try those great "OH SH-T" moments, but LoK has me actually shouting it so loud I wake my family, even when I can predict what has happened.

A great series that I recommend to everyone.

Don't Let The Ratings Mislead You! At The End of this Series, I'd Say Korra is Almost A Great as The ATLA

I Really Loved the Original Avatar Aang Series ( I mean, who didn't?) and sincerely thought any reboot wouldn't match it's Class - Period. And Seeing The Reviews On this Korra Series, I felt It Just justified what I thought. Nothing could be as great as awesome as ATLA, even with this same directors. So For This Long, I Skipped Watching Korra because of this ratings ( Compared With Aangs 9.5, Korra currently has 8.6). That was very stupid. Never Believe Ratings.

Maybe the high expectations or the loyalty to the original series made people consider this series not as great, though The 1st few episodes suggested it justified. it was completely different, and not lovely & was quite complicated. But as the Story goes on, maybe Season 3 & 4, Are doubtably the best ever Seasons in History of Cartoons. I'm not kidding. Last Episode of The 3rd Season, Wow! Remember the Very Last epiosde of ATLA? Sosen's comet part4? Well, You're missing the chance to see a better Finale, I'd Dare Say, Than that if you miss korra's season 3 last epi. Low Ratings MUST be from People Who Just watched 1st Season or the 2nd to the max... No Way Season 3 & 4 Deserved Ratings leeser than 9! So Do Yourself a favour And watch the whole 4 Seasons of Korra... You will see A worthy Successor for ATLA.

P.S. Pardon my grammar. Love From Sri Lanka To The Whole Avatar Universe! Most Favourite Cartoon Series Ever! From Aang to Korra... And To All The AVATARs to Follow!

A good sequel

While the original series is better, this sequel series is good as well.

Of all the characters, Bolin was my favorite one. And Pabu too. The series was fun to watch.

The second-best cartoon IMO

I enjoyed Avatar: The Last Airbender and was so excited when this one was coming out. I don't have cable but I managed to watch the episodes online and was pleasantly surprised. New heroes and villains, plus 1920s-styled cities and themes with science and magic coexisting. And Avatar Korra is one of the best female protagonists since Disney's Mulan.

As far as cartoons go, this is my second-favorite of all of them. I have online friends who also enjoy it and one says it is her favorite of the two bender shows. As for me, they both reach outstanding in their own ways; both Aang and Korra's respective adventures. And maybe Disney could try their own ambitious adventure serial. That'd make things a little more interesting.

Without spoilers what you should expect from each season

Let's settle this down, Avatar The last air bender (ATLA) > The Legend of Korra (LOK). However LOK contains a few episodes that match ATLA and some would even say it surpasses it! So you should give it a try and here's what to expect from each season (the best ones are seasons three and four!).

Season 1 - I think that I made the mistake to start watching LOK immediately after finishing ATLA. And boy I was not ready for this transition! Goodbye the sweet walks/flies on Appa's back, exploring the world and it's lovely nature. The charming Asian influenced music is replaced by some sort of jazz (forgive my absence of music knowledge). The new stage of this show is a sort 1920's New-York with cars and electricity! The main character is impulsive, kind of violent and far from "peace and love" Aang. At first I really didn't like it, I felt the charm of ATLA world was lost. It took me a long time to get acquainted to this new team Avatar and environment.

Anyway, I think that the writing was good, you could rely to the vilain. He felt real, had solid convictions and was a real threat. So overall season 1 had nice fights/animation (as always) good plot, but transitioning to this new universe/team avatar was hard.

Season 2 - When you think that it's going better and that you are getting used to this new environment, well it gets worse. This season basically delves into Avatar mythology/spirit world and it's connection to the physical world. This leads to two awesome episodes about the original Avatar, but also to a finale I just couldn't rely to. During the last episode I caught myself looking at my watch and wondering when it would finally end. The plot just went on vacation and I felt disconnected to the show. Nonetheless this season still had some epic bending fights, two great back story episodes and it sets the foundation for seasons three and four, and change is about to come!

Season 3 - After season two let down, I thought that nothing would match ATLA, then came last two seasons to prove me partially wrong. Book 3 is back with a tangible protagonist and plot. Though a bit like a diesel engine: slow at the beginning but getting really good at the end. In my opinion this season excelled in terms of bending fights, the last three episodes probably contain the best fights of both ATLA and LOK. This time I was a hundred percent into the show and felt real threats towards the antagonists. We also get to see new forms of bending and a lot of change in Avatar universe (due to the wizardry that happened in book 2).

Season 4 - Some argue that this book is better than book three, I would say that season three was more entertaining, more spectacular, more dramatic than season four. Though the last book is more mature. Dealing with PTSD, consequences of its past actions and a lot of character's development. I really enjoyed it, it was slower, yet we still got some good fights, the villain was good and the plot was believable.

I felt quite empty when the show ended, I was still hungry for more. However I didn't feel as sad as when ATLA was over (the proof that LOK just couldn't match ATLA and yet managed to create a good attachment to its characters, and yes in the end I loved this retro-futuristic universe). So I definitely recommend watching this series, just keep in mind that it is not ATLA 2. You get to see a few ATLA characters, but they only play minor roles. The plot mainly revolves around Avatar Aang's legacy and how the new Avatar must forge its own identity and rise to help the world.

Hang in there Until Season 3

Season 1 and 2 left a lot to be desired. The avatar had already mastered 3 elements when we are first introduced to her, so there's not the progression in her skills that is rewarding to watch. She can go into the avatar state at will, but more so- too much. Avatar state should have been used sparingly, but it lost its awe-inducing power over the audience because of that There being 1 bad guy a season didn't work great... I wish they had kept one bad guy underlying for the whole thing. There was too much pro bending. And I hated how fast Korra got into a relationship and in love, practically from episode 1. Why am I giving it 9 starts then? Because season 3 and 4 are phenomenal. They are the Avatar series we know and love at its very best. I won't spoil these seasons for those reading the reviews, but please do hang in there while you watch seasons 1 and 2- it will get better (so much better)!!

Great anime series

At first I was a bit unsure during the first couple of episodes I watched after being such a fan of "The Last Air Bender". It didn't seem to have the same spark as TLAB had, but as I carried on watching more episodes it ended up making its own spark. It doesn't have as much of the comical aspect as TLAB but is darker and a bit more aggressive. Don't worry though there are still the characters that will make you chuckle. As with all good anime series there is a character which people can relate too and see them develop and grow through out the series. This is a great series for anime fans of all ages. I know I enjoyed it hope you will to.

Phenomenal series not given the credit deserved

The show isn't really for kids, and that's probably why it received unsuccessful ratings on Nickelodeon. The number of moral and political undercurrents is astonishing, and without heavy violence or profane language still manages to be very enjoyable.

The idea is incredibly unique, the world, the concept of the elements, it all fits perfectly. Korra is in many ways the perfect 21st century female protagonist. Strong, independent, and leading the way for equality (reference to the 1st season). Yes, The Last Airbender was probably universally preferred, yet it was also more suited to its demographic. Korra is a show that creates almost a superhero-esque reality that has very dimensional characters and story lines that creates a truly brilliant series. It is a true shame the show wasn't picked up by Netflix or another network, because the Avatar Universe still has so much more potential.

To anyone who hasn't watched the show, I thoroughly recommend giving it a watch. Perhaps one of the lost gems of television, and if the show itself isn't perfect enough I must remind you of its groundbreaking ending.

Avatar: The Reincarnation

We were so into the first Avatar series that we effectively binged watched it, at the rate of about one season per week, even if we were cognizant the whole time that it didn't quite equal its predecessor, though the animation was certainly more advanced (no animation cels on the market for either, strangely).

Korra was a bit too impetuous at first but she became much more likable in the later seasons. Still the character development wasn't as extensive as in the Last Airbender, and the light humor to counterbalance the epic quest in that series wasn't nearly as prominent in the sequel.

Another problem was that there was a separate story-line for each season. The first, with the anti-bending populism, was the most interesting; the second, with the origin of Avatar episode, and the idea of the dark avatar, was the most epic. It took some of the wind out of the sails of the last two, though they had interesting portrayals of anarchism and fascism that are highly relevant for contemporary America.

We also enjoyed the references to Ghibli, which were just as common in this series as the last one. I especially liked the nod to the "giant warriors" and the "seven days of fire" from Nausicaa in the giant robot with the spirit weapon that Kuvira uses in her attack on Republic City at the end of season 4.

Sienna's favorite character: Korra (and Toff); Sebastian's favorite: Mako; Paul's favorite: Tenzin (and Uncle Ihro in the Spirit World)

Watch Till The End! It's Worth It

People, including me, have closely compared this show to its predecessor for too long. When I first watched this in 2012-2014, I was only 13 years old. I missed the quirkiness of the characters, the memorable songs, the growth we see in each major character, and the undeniable world building prowess.

Having rewatched it just now at the age 22, I finally see how good of a show The Legend of Korra is. When you first start it, you keep thinking back to the old characters and world, wondering what happened to the old gang and reminiscing over the previous show. Give LoK a chance to stand on its own two feet and grow into itself. Korra is very different from Aang--older, more hot-tempered, impulsive and, admittedly, less funny. I struggled to watch her the first two seasons, even though I was still attached to bending and the Avatar Universe. Bolin maybe tries too hard to be funny, but his heart of gold shines through and even plays an important part in the story. It also be that his sense of humor is supposed to appeal to a younger audience. I think one problem LoK has is that it has too many characters, too few time. It's not really the creators' fault. I just wish we could see more of some characters, and I think ATLA did a better job of centering the show around a core group and featuring new characters/bringing back old characters in each episode.

However, season 3 and season 4 are definitely the best ones for me. It's not only that the villains are better, with complex motives and cooler bending styles. Korra faces a different type of battle with each one (without spoiling too much), and I was moved by the mature subjects this show touched upon: PTSD, feelings of incompetence, loss, change. Korra grows in more ways than one by the end of show; you will truly experience heart pain and swell right alongside the characters. LoK still has dynamic and well-animated fighting scenes, and I ended up finding this new futuristic side of the Avatar Universe absolutely fascinating. Just think about the Industrial Revolution in the US and how much innovation was happening at the time!

This show and its predecessor will always be very, very dear to my heart. Do not sleep on The Legend of Korra! And some SERIOUS kudos to Michael and Bryan for churning out amazing content even while Nickelodeon had half a mind to cancel this show at every season and wouldn't give them more episodic freedom.

Good!

When you have a metal bender quickly rip off sheet metal and force it around her for armor during a battle sequence, you know you're watching gold.

It's full of quick 1 second moments that if you look away for just a moment, you miss some great visuals.
