Jimmy Carr in Jimmy Carr: His Dark Material (2021)

Jimmy Carr: His Dark Material

8/10

Not for everyone, but 8/10 for me.

This was my first Jimmy Carr special and it is full of various types of (very cleverly written) one-liners that you'll either absolutely enjoy or totally hate.

If dark and 'offensive' comedy is your thing, you should check this out. If you like standup but this style isn't your thing, stay away from this unless you want to get your BP high.

Classic Jimmy

Simple as, if you're a fan of Jimmy you need to see this, just try not to get too distracted by his amazing new hairline lol.

Probably up there as one of his best but he's always been constant and a lot of laugh out loud moments here.

Don't watch if you're easily offended, THIS IS NOT YOUR SAFE SPACE!

One star reviews are exactly who Jimmy offended

It's hilarious after you watch this special that will be the first thing that comes to your mind. These one star reviews were literally his point about people who get offended at everything and go on the attack. This show was nothing short of brilliant, original and very funny. But if you're, as Jimmy would say, "fine China" and easily offended then skip this one. It's definitely not for weak people. Which is what makes it so refreshing, the humor is hardcore but very funny. Bravo, Mr. Carr.

Funny and contemporary

Nice to have more comedy on Netflix as we all need a laugh. Some contemporary jokes on the previous two years subjects like covid, vaccine, black lives matter, veganism. Brings up some good points on todays society with his dark humour. Carr has some jokes from previous shows but still hilarious nevertheless.

The new camera angle is a little annoying panning around him unnecessarily. Would have preferred to see the audience more when talking to them.

The master of the one-liner

This is a top 10 special no doubt. Should go alongside some of the great specials of all time.

I've seen em all, he's a pros pro. Halfway through the special, he's such a G, he asks the audience to start heckling him. Carr puts the C in confidence, definitely rewatchable. A+

Just OK

Seemed he was trying too hard to offend that it became unfunny at times, his one liners made me chuckle a bit. The easily offended should look elsewhere, he literally offends EVERYONE but as he says it's a joke.

Funny AF

If you know jimmy carr you know what's he's capable of. It's a good hour of crude funny jokes : tearing into people. But snowflakes will get offended.

Netflix 100% paid him to do the covid & racism bits

Its pretty obvious Netflix paid him a fat amount of money and required him to include covid and racism into the bits. There are a good amount of funny parts but its spread out too much. Near the end is where all the dark jokes start.

It is very funny, and funnier because it offends the snowflakes

To be honest, it was quite funny. Great one liners and good timing on the punchlines. The funnier thing to observe is how much this has offended the snowflakes who are usually so concerned about each and everything triggering them (right to the point of people not using pronouns in their display name). Loved it.

This is like the antidote to the lecture/sermon of Hannah Gatsby which the audience feels 'obliged' to clap/cheer for her because if they don't they are misogynists/sexists or whatever. Not because she is funny, in fact quite far from it. You can hear people 'actually' enjoy Carr's jokes and the groans when he pushes the boundary. Really good.

Distractingly bad editing

I love being scandalized by Jimmy Carr. Dark Materials contains a lot of classic content, but the editing is *astonishingly bad*, especially in the first half. In the first few minutes there isn't a continuous section of 30 seconds which does not contain poor editing, and it distracts greatly from the experience.

9 stars for Jimmy, 0 stars for the director and editor.

Jimmy: Hire some better staff for your next special please.

Not offended, just bored

When the comedian laughs more than you, there's a problem. I felt the jokes were surface level, too easy, it read like a high school's edgy teen's talent show stand up. I came with an open mind but I was so bored, I didn't even get to feel scandalised.

AVOID!

Another piece of Netflix garbage. Just stop paying this dude, he's just recycling old material. Bad jokes, making fun of the audience and feeling superior. Man is he annoying and tasteless. I liked his old stuff, but this is just a lazy money grab. AVOID!

Don't Whinge He Literally Warns The Viewer

Im sure much of the complaining about the material in this special is just to drum up interest. Sure he says some out there things but comedy should have an edge.

I would prefer someone say really dark things than do them (Mr Cosby).

Its like anything 'offensive' if you don't like it exercise the option to give it a miss.

The heckling section was a bit lame (because the audience had nothing to offer) but some of his other material very funny :)

Never disappoints

Jimmy Carr is one of the funniest people. I loved almost everything about it. Some moments were a little meh, but I think the worst worst worst thing about it, and this is what Netflix is doing to all stand ups now apparently, is that camera in the stand up face just running around. The guy is being circled by a camera, it's awful! They did that for Jack Whitehall too stop it Netflix! NOW!

Not good not bad

I usually really like Jimmy Carr's shows, but this one was kind of "meh". The reason being that many of the jokes / one-liners in the show either have a predictable punchline or I've heard some version of the same joke already.

There are still some gems in this show, and if you're looking for a nice casual viewing then I'd still recommend giving it a try. However, dont expect (in my opinion) a show full of great stuff, I kind of expected more from Mr. Carr.

Also the anti anti-vaxxers in the comments are pretty funny, seeing as they're all wound up about ONE, literally one, anti-vaxx joke in the show. Why watch comedy if you can't take a joke yourself?

Karens will write 1 star reviews here.

I've seen Jimmy Carr perform before but only snippets of his act. Also, I've seen him before on the celebrity roasts. I had the opinion that he was pretty funny but that he also drops some duds too. My expectations were met here with His Dark Material. He really does go dark here plus he gives a warning at the start so I'm not sure why the snowflakes kept watching. It had some LOL moments as well as some groaners. I loved how he crushed anti-vaxxers without mercy. He doesn't pull any punches with some of his targets. There were about a handful of times I was in stitches laughing and another handful of times where I was "no, dude" but that's what you get with this type of comedy. He is kind of like Jim Jeffries in that way. I am now looking forward to checking out more of Jimmy Carr's comedic work and I would like to see him in an evil antagonist movie role at some point.

Bloody Mary!

An entertaining hour that will never be shown on mainstream - no, not even Channel 4!

I wouldn't say the jokes are LOL but there is one about LOL!

A real comedian doesn't need to swear to get attention or even have the need to laugh at their own jokes to do so.

If you are doing smart jokes then at least give your audience the respect of assuming they are equally intelligent enough to understand it without being arrogant enough to explain yourself.

The dark material is close to the edge and jokes that make you give a sharp intake of breath are probably funnier than the ones that make you laugh.

Jokes about sex and genitalia are far funnier when done as double-entendre that blatantly told like this.

Definitely not family entertainment and not sure why it was released at Christmas time. There is no goodwill to all men here.

I am afraid, I won't be rushing to see his shows.

Funny and easy going

He is a one liner type comedian with a few stories and themes mixed in. But I don't mind that as it's quick and constant humour.

People are moaning about the jokes and topics but firstly it's a joke and secondly it is called 'his dark material'.

Overall, I enjoyed it and it was funny and touched some dark subjects in a funny manner.

Really surprised...

So in this past month I have only just watched a stand up of jimmy Carr and I think he's great!!! Then I watched this... So funny and his expressions are brilliant. Definitely not for the snowflakes and that's why I like it... Hope there's more of this to come.

Carr does not miss a beat

Despite the mixed reviews there is two things that sets him out from the rest:

1. There's not many stand-up comedians (if almost any) that can keep you entertained in specials for a solid hour - of just them on a stage - without one feeling bored at a point or another and eventually turning it off two thirds in cause that one good joke in the trailer has already passed and now you have suffered through enough to know its not going to get better.

Well... except for Carr. I think he is one of few that never has me or my partner watching the time and always leave one wanting more.

2. He truly shines when it comes to hecklers. Many SUC choke or has comebacks worthy of the playground however both the speed, accuracy and puns in his response are as ever brilliant.

Passable

It was good enough to keep me smiling, but not so to make me laugh. The one-liner format isn't really something I found to be to my liking, because the punchlines felt somewhat predictable and as if I was scrolling through my Edgy Memez folder.. Although to be fair, I don't know if the format was a Jimmy Carr thing or a "His Dark Material" thing... Yes, this is my first exposure to Jimmy's work.

Overall it wasn't bad... The offensive and dark humour could definitely have been better and more importantly, elaborate, as it adds a sense of build up to what could lead to a pretty messed up punchline which honestly would have reeled me in much more! But yea, decent enough I guess!

Running on fumes

There are basically three groups of reviews of this show: people who like Jimmy for his offensive material and therefore think he can do no wrong (and any criticism is invalid). People who find his material beyond-the-pale offensive and hate him. I'm in the third category. I'm a big fan and have watched all of his standup shows many times. His first Netflix special was great, although I had a vague feeling at times that I'd heard some of the material before. His second Netflix special -- the "greatest hits" show -- was by definition disappointing if you already knew his material. So I had great hopes for this show, which I expected to be all new. And although he does hit the mark occasionally, you can kind of guess where he's going all the time. He's still a fantastic performer, but there's definitely less of the sharp wordplay that was a big part of his fame.

Downgraded jimmy

I used to like this guy, the king of the one-liner. But he is just another person afraid to really expose the bs and woke culture we are overwhelmed with today. I expected him to actually do a humorous exposure of the covid fraud and that very well-marketed 'black lives matter' propaganda, sponsored by Soros. Dig deep Jimmy, give us some inspiration. I do like your new look though, maybe it's just ageing well, but Jimmy is certainly not up there with the great George Carlin.

Decemt Comdy

It is, a Typical Jimmy Carr set, while he poked fun at people not taking the vaccine, jokes on him, almost my entire family has had Covid (i have had it twice), out of 75ish, only 1 person passed, the only one who got the jab with complete organ failure.. I love Jimmy Carr's humor, but he is not really relevamt. He basically pokes at easy things with short jabs where real comedians actually put thought into their material. Nothing wrong with a short jab, but it is "playing it safe". Makes one wonder who the real idiots are, the ones jumping in getting jabbed without thorough clinically proven testing (like they did with Polio Vaccine) or the ones who said nope.. Jimmy Carr, the bafoon.
