In the Quiz Bowl, Rallo is asked to "Name the metalworking process practiced by Sir Basil Brooke at the Coalbrookdale Ironworks in Shropshire." He then launches into a speech about his deep base of practical knowledge vs useless, trivial knowledge and the answer is never revealed. Sir Basil Brooke received a patent for the "cementation process", which was an early process for increasing the amount of carbon in iron and making steel. The process involves wrought iron and charcoal being packed together in alternating layers in a large, airtight stone pot within a furnace. They were then heated from below for a week or more and when the process was complete and the wrought iron had gained enough carbon from the charcoal to form blister steel, the bars were removed and left to cool. Once cool, the bars were shortened, bound, heated, and forge welded together to become shear steel.
