    • Trivia
During the war in Afghanistan, Dipprasad Pun, a Sergeant in the Royal Gurkha Rifles upheld family and Gurkha tradition, and demonstrated why Gurkhas are known around the world for their deadlines and bravery; by defending his position, alone, against at least 30 Taliban soldiers.

While on guard duty at an outpost, Sergeant Pun interrupted insurgents planting an IED in the road outside. Upon realising he was surrounded, he removed a machine gun from it's tripod and carried it while returning fire. When the machine gun ammo ran out, Pun threw 17 grenades at the enemy. When the grenades ran out, he switched to his service rifle, and a claymore mine, which he also threw at the attackers. When an insurgent climbed a neighbouring building to gain access to the roof the Sergeant was fighting from, Pun threw the now empty tripod at him, knocking him off the roof. By the time reinforcements arrived, Pun had singlehandedly killed 30 Taliban soldiers, and saved many lives by preventing the Taliban from taking the outpost. Sergeant Pun was awarded the Conspicuous Gallantry Cross by Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace.

When asked about his heroism, Pun has said that he had no choice but to fight, he was surrounded and alone and "I had so many of them around me that I thought I was definitely going to die so I thought I'd kill as many of them as I could before they killed me."

Apart from their almost mythical fighting prowess, everything stated, or even implied about Gurkhas is wrong, and displays a shocking level of ignorance.

Gurkhas are not mercenaries. They are highly regarded members of the British and Indian military "with a reputation of being amongst the finest and most feared soldiers in the world." In fact, as of 2023, there is a recruitment ban on India due to the country's horrifying new military hiring policy, which appears designed to create thousands of mercenaries, something that is abhorrent to Gurkhas.

Gurkhas are said to be the reason no other country even thinks about starting a war with Nepal.

Gurkhas are all Nepalese soldiers who serve or have served in the Gurkha regiments of the British or Indian Army. The regiments in India are all former English regiments who chose to stay in India when the English left in '47, they are not Indian soldiers. Since there are no Indian Gurkhas, they have no loyalty to India, and none of them would wage a private war to protect the country. A Gurkha cannot be patriotic and look after India's interests. Nepal is a different country. Gurkha recruits have never been under 18. Britain has never had child soldiers, and all Gurkhas are recruited according to the rules set out by the English who started the whole thing. Mercenaries are not trained. They are people who have military training, whose loyalty is solely to the pay; hence the name "soldiers of fortune". Gurkhas are soldiers. And Gurkhas cannot have the most battlefield kills in Afghanistan after the English and US armies. They are part of the English army.

Kensi Blye: I'm standing on my frozen lake. Your frozen lake is the name for what you want the most in the world, and you want it... you want it so bad that you'll do anything to get it. And your heart takes over. But because of that... it destroys you in the end. It's right there, just sitting in the middle of this frozen lake. And you think you're fast enough to-to go out there and grab it before the ice cracks...

Marty Deeks: ...And what you don't realize is you're already standing on the ice and it's falling apart around you.
