Elliot Tests Out a Normal Life

This episode feels more like a "what-if" story that shows what Elliot's life would be like without fsociety. We get to see Elliot experience happiness for a change and develop the healthier parts of his relationships, but of course the joy doesn't last for long. This is contrasted by Tyrell's increasing acts of American Psycho-esque violence when his career plans don't go as planned. A character-building episode rather than a plot-building one.

    Almost lost me

This is where Mr. Robot almost lost my interest. This episode felt like a compilation of unnecessary sexual shock value mixed with corny drama. Despite it still being well done, it sort of drifted away from the brilliance of the first episode. Not horrible. Not great. But I know this show gets MUCH better after episode 4.

    Rewatch, 8.55/10

When I first watched this series, this was definitely my least favorite episode in the entire show/series. My favorite things about this episode were the Protagonist, the music, and the pacing. My favorite characters this episode we're Elliot, Angela, and Gideon. The plot twist in this episode was very good but kind of eh compared to 407 and 413. Overall, this was definitely on the same level as 3x10 BRBA, so yeah it was a great episode, but compared to the others? That's crazy to think that it is better than the next one. My least favorite things in this episode were the amount of nudity used and enjoyability being a downgrade.

    Interesting characters development

I don't have too much to say about this episode, it didn't have a plot, but it built a pretty good character development, talking about Tyrell's personality.

Also, we got to see more about Elliot and Angela's past, how they met and their father and mother's history.

I really liked the debug and bug analogy about life. Comparing the hard work of managing a bug, with having a "bug free" life. Moreover, this lifestyle didn't last long for Elliot.

I felt happy for Elliot asking Shayla to be his girlfriend, leaving her past job behind and starting a new beginning. It was very cute how she opened to Elliot about her hobby.

I hope things go well for Angela, after Ollie's mistake.

A distinct drop in quality from the previous episodes.

The first two episodes of Mr. Robot are absolutely incredible. With Rami Malek and Christian Slater's great performances, the unique direction, and the thought-provoking commentary on society; I was thinking that this show was simply too good to be true. This episode makes me think I was partially right.

Now don't get me wrong; this episode was still good in many ways. Rami Malek and Christian Slater are still very strong performance-wise; as are basically every other actor except maybe Portia Doubleday as Angela. I got no emotion from her in a scene where there should have been quite a lot. The direction was also just as, if not stronger, than the last two episodes.

However, the thing that really made this episode not work for me was the focus on other characters besides Elliot. The previous episodes really thrived on you seeing the world through Elliot's eyes, but this one decided to have entire story lines that had absolutely nothing to do with that narrative. If you're reading this review you are probably arguing that this was just character development. I'm fine with there being character development, but the way they did this, with Tyrell especially, just bored me. I feel like there are other ways to show you what's going on behind the scenes. I'm not specifically suggesting anything, I'm just saying that they could have done it better.

You had a connection to Elliot as a viewer in the first two episodes, but that connection was lost in this one. However that does not mean that this still isn't very good television and that I won't continue watching the rest of this series.

I give Season One, Episode Three of Mr Robot a six out of ten.

    • Quotes

Gideon Goddard: We might get lucky, they might get sloppy, make a mistake, you know, catch some...

Elliot Alderson: This is the world we live in. People relying on each other's mistakes to manipulate one another, use one another, even relate to one another. A warm, messy circle of humanity.
