    Upstart Crow 5

With a large dollop of inspiration from Macbeth, Ben Elton heads north of the border to to give fair representation to Scots and even manages to throw in a fried Mars bar joke.

The outbreak of the plague leads Will and his friends to escape to the family home in Stratford. On the way, they meet three mad witches who have some surprising prophecies that Will might be going up the property ladder.

His neighbour MacBuff drops by for a glass of milk and Will thinks he has murdered him by accidentally giving him white paint. Kate irritates Will's daughter and Kempe tries to bring some continental improvised comedy to entertain the great and the good only to find that the tried and trusted kick on the backside jokes brings the big laughs.

This episode really is Blackadder II meets Shakespeare, but niftily done. Elton gets to fit in gags about the state of public transport, moody teenagers, rising house prices, whinging Scots and the state of English comedy.

The title is a quote from 'Macbeth', Act 1 Scene 2, as indeed are many of the plot elements in this story.
    • Quotes

Marlowe: Well, it's better than being in London. You do not wanna be in Southwark with the Black Death in town.

Kate: Such a shame they had to close the theatres.

Will: Hmm, a grim business. We were giving my Richard the night it struck. Awful moment. I thought half the audience had nodded off. Big relief to discover they were dead.

Bottom: 'Course, some of them had died in their sleep.

Will: A few, Bottom, Ten at most.
