A large and complex embroidery. Cultural references, irony in high levels, absurde situations, realism used in special manner. And something giving status of fascinating to a short animation about Cosmos a melon and a not so happz Dave.
I loved it, but I understand than some might not get it. This is only a Pilot for a Series, so no real story here, as this is more of an introduction to the characters and style of the whole thing. But this is already full of references, some obvious and some much less obvious, and I loved the visual design.
Black Holes is one of the most EXCITING short film I've ever seen, I want to thank and salute the creators for the masterpiece they offered to the public with such generosity! I loved everything about it : it's BEAUTIFUL, very WELL CRAFTED, ORIGINAL, UNSETTLING, CLEVER, FUNNY... The list is endless. The satirical tone and the attention to details give access to several layers of understanding. What seems to be flimsy and dumb on the surface is actually very RICH and DEEP. The references are BRILLIANT. I found the rhythm and storytelling absolutely perfect. The parallel between humanity's thirst for greatness and knowledge (symbolized by science and space exploration) and the fragility of our condition (self-consciousness, insecurity of the main character) is amazing and hilarious. Apparently the creators are working on a SERIES. There has never been a 3D animated series of that quality on TV ever! This would be a REVOLUTION. I can't wait.
If you're tired of the expected Black Holes is for you! I have no interest in 3D animation, too formatted (probably for profitability reasons) but Black Holes really stroke me. It's an amazing breath of fresh air. The visual style, characters, tone, sound design... everything is spot-on. Personally I really enjoy this kind of humour, in the same vein as Monty Python, Quentin Dupieux (director of Rubber who is credited on the score and sound design here), the Cohen Brothers sometimes, H2G2, etc... Can't wait to see the series.
I start by saying this is not a mass consumption product. This is not a "McDonalds" type product. It is highly stylized and quirky. Many will not like it but some will absolutely love it. There will be a Season 1 that should follow with this being the pilot. I look eagerly forward to it. It surprised me when I looked at IMDb for the voice actors. I recognized several and was surprised.
