This opening certainly introduces both characters and themes of the series in an extremely effective way. Peppered with funny scenes, the series manages to present Sam's and his family's lives: all of them shaped by Sam's condition.
Zahid already stands out, even being a secondary character, as an incredible comic relief. He adds humour and strikes a balance compensating for Sam's innocent perception of reality.
The choice of Antartica and penguins as the motif to allow the character to reflect upon life is both hilarious and profound.
The story of the parents is somewhat slow at times, but it certainly adds a layer of complexity to the series.
Definitely worth watching.

I like the first episode becouse to me is good the help of the sister of sam, and the acting of the people si nice old the acting of the famili, the start of the series.
I really enjoyed the first episode and it is a great start to the series. The episode introduces very well the main characters: an overprotective mother, a father that wants to be closer to his son and sister that proyecta his brother.
I think that the title was well Chosen because Sam talks all the time about Antartica and penguins.
I think that the episode shows autism in a very realistic way I think that some parts are innapropiate for little kids I think that it is a great episode and I would recommend it.

First of, how the episode starts. In the start you can easily recognize how sam life is, pinguins being his comfort thing is very clever and I rlly liked how they could associate pinguins with humans (sometimes it's hilarious)
Loved the characters and their personality's, honestly in this first episode it looks like the world revolves around Sam, but then everybody gets their own problems and own perspectives. Actors and actrices were great.

I loved the pilot episode of Atypical. It does a great job of introducing Sam and his daily navigation through life while being surrounded by neuro normative people. The show communicates autism in a very realistic way which I appreciate. I especially appreciate how this episode of Atypical depicts Sam's family. He has a father that struggles to connect with him, as they have nothing in common. He has an overprotective mother that fears him trying new things as she is afraid of the risk that comes along with it. He has a sister whose entire personality is shaped by her need to protect not only her brother but other people that are mistreated. Atypical shows how the world of autism shapes family life and communicates that in a way many people can empathize with. Autism not only affects the autistic person, but also the people around them. Atypical demonstrates this to the fullest extent in the debut episode. In under 45 minutes, it is able to set the tone for the entire series. I have no complaints! Looking forward to watching more!

- TriviaThis first season attracted some criticism for not featuring any real actors with autism. Considering that the show is about that subject, it was rather noticeable that no one in the cast actually had that condition. This was something that was immediately redressed in the subsequent seasons.
