When Clarissa Mao wakes up in the Rocinante's sickbay the medical read-out on the monitor explains that what she uses to make her gain brief periods of super-human strength is an implant in the roof of her mouth called a Endocrine Enhancement Implant. The endocrine system is responsible for producing the body's hormones like adrenaline, cortisol, dopamine, epinephrine, serotonin and sex hormones like estrogen, progesterone and testosterone. The monitor has a description of the implants function which reads as follows: "Control module for a full endocrine axis conversion. Effects the right posterior parietal cortex, the right prefrontal cortex, as well as frontal-striatal circuits to alter the subjects perception of time. Saturates the body's system with a synthetic compound as well as enables the endocrine system to over produce hormones that, when mixed and activated via control mechanism, create an extreme state of hyper physical strength and mental awareness in the subject. The stress created from this process would temporarily incapacitate the user."
