Ruthless Campaigners/Philosophers in Old Age

Burns' America Lives seems to pattern its historical renditions of our early leaders in this pattern: Adams and Jefferson were both ruthless strivers in their political campaigns -- starting libelous rumors about their opponents. After their political success and in their dotage, their writing are all about democracy, gardens, family, loves, and peace and harmony. Adams and Jefferson, who had once been enemies but now write flower letters about their respect for each others' wisdom and friendship. It's like politicians today: they get elected and then their only goal in life is to stay elected (the power thing) and are essentially useless at governing.
