Eulogy

Exceptionally frustrating episode. One one side we have the story of an attempted fuel-retrieval mission. Included in the actual mission is the lightness and silly comedy driven by the interplay of Don, Judy, and a number of ancillary characters. Plenty of reasons to smile even within the drama of the mission. Very enjoyable (and welcomed with all of the bad news the colonists have faced). On the other side we have the dark manipulations of Dr. Smith (no spoiler here, she has been lying and conniving since the first moment we saw her on screen). This episode it was too much and too dark, Why doesn't anyone see through her haze of lies? Why does everyone accept the ludicrous things she says without question? Why doesn't anyone implement the most basic practical safety considerations with respect to the Robot? Watching Smith manipulate the mentally unstable and small children is worse than unpleasant and drags the science fiction story into that dark. (It is the viewer who is being manipulated most of all here.) Perhaps it is supposed to make her (hopefully) eventual comeuppance more satisfying? The cost of the weak (and the intrepid viewer's time indulging her by watching) may be too high a price to pay - only time (and the remaining season episodes) will tell

...not to end on the dark side, the heart-crushing actions of Will are beautiful and mature beyond his young years. He is the light of the series...

When you're writing or filming science fiction you have to remember to sprinkle just a wee bit of science onto the thick layer of fiction. The planet is about to be sucked into a black hole but no mention of event horizon. Some kind of bossy housewife aka Big Scientist is "weighing" whether to tell her group about her findings AND is somehow the only one who noticed all the physics events around her. Oh, and Parkey Posey is still a talentless hack. Without her it'd be a damn good show.

I'm a little more than halfway through with season 1 and I can't understand Dr Smiths actions, motivations or actually anything about her. She's a totally unlikable character which unless Parker Posey is the same makes her a great actress. I see Dr Smiths actions and I truly can't fathom them at all.

The rest of the cast plays their characters perfectly as well. Molly Parker is one of the greatest actresses ever. She has been great in everything since I first saw her in Deadwood. Mina Sundwall captures the original series Penny perfectly and adds a whole new dimension to Penny. I'm excited to see the rest.

From 17:12 -That talk between Maureen and "Doctor Smith" was especially creepy this episode, right?

The robot offers Will a multi -coloured crystal. All my dogs ever offer me are bright eyes and wagging tails. Oh. And stools.

Being able to connect emotionally with character(s)? Yes/No

While I get where they are trying to go, the nature of the way the writers went about it (without spoiling) seems clumsy and very ham-fisted.
