Underappreciated

A satisfying low-budget movie that does many things right with unexpected twists and clean choreography. There's a clear understanding of technique and an entertaining experience. The pace slows in segments, but I've seen movies with bigger budgets that tell more cliched stories.

Awesome anthology movie

Very good movie. I was surprised. Their choice of cover art is horrible and makes it look cheap but it's not. Give it a watch. If you like horror at all you'll enjoy this.

Mick Garris Rallies the Horror Masters Again

Aw, yeah! This is a pretty good anthology for a Saturday night watch. Garris and company know how to bring the fun to the horror, which is what got me into horror films in the first place. My favorite horror films all have a sense of fun: Waxwork, Nightmare on Elm Street 3 - Dream Warriors, Lost Boys, etc. It's gotta be scary AND fun to get me hooked and coming back. Mick Garris is well aware of these dynamics, and they show in Nightmare Cinema.

While not as precise and crafty as Garris's Masters of Horror (which remains his defining work as a director and producer), this feels in the same vein, and in the same universe. If you're a fan of the masters, of 80s horror, Nightmare Cinema delivers the goods. I'll always get excited for anything that has Mick's name attached. He's a legend in the genre, and it's great to see something new from him.

some strange choices, but worth a chance

It has some strange choices, for instance the first movie looks cheap but funny, but only later we see some good actors.

Give it a shot

Horror anthology containing 5 stories. I would rank these in this order 1-2-5-4-3. If you don't like the first two stories just turn it off because they're best. The second story gives me black mirror vibes and the 3rd being the only one I thought was uninspired and just not very good.

Not Bad

Love 'em or hate 'em, but anthologies are always a mixed bag with conflicting styles and tones throughout. You're bound to like some stories more than others. Nightmare Cinema still manages to entertain in spite of this even if the wraparound story (starring Mickey Rourke of all people) is a little on the weak side.

The first story is a somewhat entertaining take on the typical "kids go to a cabin in the woods" slasher story that seems to start where most of these kinds of movies would end. There's a good twist here and a few funny tongue in cheek bits even if it's nothing major to write home about. The next deals with a disfigured girl who decides to get plastic surgery to please her handsome fiance and things quickly get out of hand. Its message is a tad confusing and makes you wish they'd had a bit longer to really let some of the moments sink in more. The third is one of the more effective segments as a demon terrorizes and possesses the children at a Catholic school causing the head priest and nun to take matters into their own hands. There's a moment that recalled Lamberto Bava's Demons with decapitated heads and loose body parts flying everywhere in a circus of blood and it's a memorable image for sure. The fourth story is a grim, stark black and white portrait of a frazzled mother who may or not be losing her mind and it's memorable for the lovely cinematography, production design, and experimental spirit. The final story deals with a young man who has a near death experience and begins to see ghosts of people who have recently died. It's an ok story with a good, downer punch at the end.

Whether you like the stories or not, there's a lot of admirable creative spirit in Nightmare Cinema and all the stories are beautifully shot and well acted. There are better horror anthologies, but there are many, many that are far worse. At least this one doesn't feel like a waste of time.

Much better than what we see today

This film has the talent of old acquaintances such as Joe Dante and Mick Garris who with a good production and a talented cast can provide us with good entertainment. There are twists and turns, unexpected situations, good climate in the creation of suspense and although there are some details (in the black and white segment, the texture of the film should be taken care of more) there is nothing great to blame. It is an entertaining movie and a joy to celebrate.

An absolute watch for the genre fans!

I love horror anthologies. Mostly there are some hidden gems in there. V/H/S series was a great example to it. The same applies to the ABC's of Death. This one has certainly a higher production value and seems to have a decent budget to pull that off.

I cannot name a single short film within that is better than the others. They all seem to be equally good. Not great, but certainly good. The "horror" value was mostly "gore", rather than a horror that gives you chills. This makes the film much easier to consume.

Would I watch it again? Yes. Would I make my friends watch it? Yeah, it looks like a great get together and watch something film while having chats in between.
