At around 45 minutes when the gigantic alien appeared, George simply shouted to Amy to go without him when he can still run towards the horse and leave together with Amy. Why is it that George did not run away from the alien when everyone else were running away scared? What a stupid scene.
If, based on the hype and trailers, you were expecting to see a production faithful to H.G. Wells' book, you are likely to be puzzled at first, and then disappointed. This version is set in the proper era, where across England, Martian cannon balls (not cylinders, but let's not quibble) are landing and wreaking havoc on the countryside. Also wreaking havoc is a script that introduces unnecessary and distracting elements and subplots including unsigned divorce papers, a liberated woman assistant scientist, premarital sex, and estranged brothers, along with awkward conversations ostensibly about the selection of new wallpaper for the parlor and breakfast rooms.
Presumably an invading army from Mars, bringing with it technology capable of wiping out the entire human race in a matter of weeks, isn't enough material to carry a three-part mini-series.
Will George convince his separated wife to sign the divorce papers so that he and Amy can marry properly before the Martians make divorce and marriage irrelevant? Will George reconcile with his estranged brother Frederick in time to get his blessing for their premarital union before the Martians take over Parliament? Will Amy's wallpaper arrive in time for the workmen to hang it and let it dry before giant tripods stomp the village flat?

Even though I had hoped so much that this would be a faithful rendition of the original HG Wells novel, done in the manner the BBC used to convert novels into shows, I knew in my heart it was not to be. As a result when I saw episode 1, I was not too disappointed, but by god could someone do a faithful rendition of the original book, pretty please.
Anyway, apart from that little rave the first episode was reasonable. The first 20 minutes was dominated by domestic backstory development and most of this could easily be skipped over without missing anything important. First casualty at 36 minutes. Gets reasonably exciting at 43 minutes and the spider thingy appear at about 48 minutes. I think it looked pretty good and the sound effects were good as well. High point at 76 min, after which its back to domestic boredom until the ending at 84min. A rather long episode, which could explain the long drawn out boring bits.
The relationship story is not bad, its just pointless and rather boring. I would suggest recording this and fast forwarding through the boring bit to get to the meat of the story. The core story, as least in episode 1, is still pretty good, but the whole feeling of hopelessness which the novel portrays is missing, which is the real down side of the core story. Perhaps its simply not possible to convert a novel into film, so I can't really criticise the BBC for this, but I must admit the 1953 version of the movie did it a lot better.
The First Episode actually was very good
Good Action, Suprises and Drama.....
But The Character-Drama is a little bit too much
I am a little bit afraid of the other 2 episodes because the Pilot got the highest Rating here on IMDB, but, i am eager to watch the other 2 as well
