Klingon filler & Section 31 prologue

It wasn't great, it wasn't bad. It was a decent filler episode. We got a peek at what Georgiou's series will entail, a possible DS9 foreshadow (is The Albino the child of Voq and L'Rell?), some resolution on Tilly's ghost (a personal highlight for me).

Now for the bad: Pike, who in my mind is the standout of this season, is mostly on the back burner. Also for the love of God no more Klingons, or at least no more Klingon blood feuds, I beg of you writers. Also I have mixed feelings about seeing Ash again, but I would love to see him as a regular in Georgiou's Section 31 series as was implied at the end.

    All in all, decent filler.

    Change of heart

Hated it at first viewing. However after watching the next few episodes it now makes perfect sense. Change rating from 1 to 7

    Is Amanda a Klingon?

    It's a valid question.

Given how her dialogue causes each and every scene that she's in come to a screeching halt, I suspect she has Klingon blood in her.

And given that she is a teacher, she has absolutely nothing to appeal to a student. She is monotonous in her tone, lacking any passion at all for inspiration. This actor is the diametric opposite of her 60s counterpart.

This episode is rated 1 for being stupid, slow and generally crappy. Watch the Orville instead.

Not as bad as other reviews claim

Infighting plagues Qo'nos, Tilly hallucinates and Burnham discusses Spock with her mother.

I mostly enjoyed this episode for the Klingon and Tilly scenes, but struggled a bit with the Spock related saga.

The Klingon scenes are a bit melodramatic but I have to admit I found them entertaining. I like the look of the Klingons with hair and it feels like a perfect balance of the old and new look. The Tilly scenes were even better and gave some decent sci-fi concepts and good character time with the crew.

Unfortunately the Burnham and Amanda scenes consisted of a lot of talking and revising Trek history for something that so far doesn't feel terribly intriguing. I hope I'm proven wrong when the plot becomes clearer.

My biggest gripe as always is the exposition heavy dialogue that plagues many scenes in the episode. The biggest and most obvious offending line was one near the end when Ash Tyler explains a method of deception used to fool the Klingons in a previous scene.

Visuals were excellent when the camera didn't move about so quickly and all performances were solid, particularly from Mary Wiseman.

    Aaaaand it's discovery again

With this episode the magic of Star Trek faded away and left us with Discovery again...

That hurts... get Jonathan Frakes back... pretty please...

This episode was just boring, stupid and bad...

Stametts says Tilly is harboring a eukaryotic organism, which is taken to mean a fungus. This is not what "eukaryotic" means -- eukaryotic organisms includes all fungi, plants, and animals, and presumably many of the extraterrestrial species on Star Trek.

Amanda Grayson: Spock speaks highly of you, Captain Pike. Now my daughter does, too, so I know I've come to the right people.

Captain Christopher Pike: Well, ma'am, that makes it all the harder for me to tell you. I can't open this file. If I did, I'd be in violation of the rules, and my mother wouldn't like that.

Michael Burnham: There is precedent in Starfleet case law for a captain to invoke...

Captain Christopher Pike: [to Amanda] Was she this bossy as a kid?

Amanda Grayson: On Vulcan, we call it "persistent", and yes, she was. She learned that from me.
