Smithereens

It was a thriller short film. Plain and simple. The people being preoccupied with their phones subplot didnt really add much to it except a device for the main characters motivation, and it just felt really forced and uninspired. Had nothing to do with the science fiction aspects associated with black mirror. This is just a story on how reality has been the last decade since Smart phones became normalized in society. Still a great short in its own right tho. The acting by the main is what holds it all together.

But in retrospect, compared to the early seasons of BM. It doesn't hold up at all.. But its by far the best of the 3 from this season...

Like the first episode, this episode is also not very "Black Mirror". However, the emotional impact it has really moves me. I just like Andrew Scott and his acting so much(btw check out "Fleabag" if you like him!). Social Media is not something innovative these days, but the way the story goes is wonderful. The story itself deserves a 10, but get a 9 since it's not as edgy as previous BM episodes.

Addiction to social networks? Facebook knowing more about you than the police? Our attention span of 1 minute regarding life and death situations? Don't text and drive? You can choose your own message, and meanwhile enjoy the usual wonderful acting of Andrew Scott and an almost equally good display from Topher Grace.

And to those saying it's not proper Black Mirror... because there's no implants involved, or as yet non-existent tech? Think back to series 1 episode 1 and have a word with yourself. Not to mention the fact that series should evolve, or die - and then we'll move on to the next one in a couple of minutes of course.

Well worth a watch a gripping hour of television with Andrew Scott at the top of his game.

Reading the reviews of this episode got me to write this review. The ones who give this episode a 8, 9 or 10 and writes a review they are the ones who got the point of what this episode was about. The people reviewing with 1, 2 or 3 starts and writing that they needed the classic black mirror twist or a high-tech device are the ones that I think this episode actually is about. People who wants quick thrills and nothing deep to think about and are on their phone all day long without realizing that the phone controls them instead of people living their lives and being master of they own decisions.
