Attended the world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on Friday. Honestly one of top 10 best films I&#39;ve ever seen. Perfect mix of pathos (not sure I&#39;ve ever cried more in a film 😳), laugh out loud humour and great music.

So Kate (Kristin Scott Thomas) and Lisa (Sharon Horgon) decide to create the first military wives choir but they need work before they have a performance of a lifetime at the royal albert hall. Wow what an uplifting and emotional movie military wife&#39;s was, so many good things to say so let&#39;s get started. Firstly, there was lots of likeable characters and a good amount of diversity with reactions of the characters. This movie did a good job at showing a diversity of characters. With some upper class women, lower class women, bigger woman and gay women which was refreshing to see, and also the different women&#39;s reactions to their husbands leaving was interesting as well, some where used to it and acted strong for their kids, but there was also the complete opposite where the women felt like they were being abandoned. So I commend the film for showing that everyone is different when it comes to the emotional impact of war. There was also a lot of likeable characters to really connect to here, I love how they explored multiple characters personalities and most of the choir members had a distinct likeable quality to them. Next, I though the film was very funny and had a surprising amount of emotional weight to it. The film blended these two tones perfectly. The comedic chemistry between a lot of the characters was excellent. And the humour was extremely relatable and felt natural instead of forced which is great and made the film itself easier to watch and likeable. But the film was also incredibly emotional as well. Having real women, with real raw and emotional experiences to their loved ones dying at war was incredibly emotional as the film explored how people react in different ways. And to see just how badly Kate was coping with her son&#39;s death was incredibly touching. I do have two slight nit-picks that didn&#39;t really effect the film but are still worth mentioning. Now there was a lack of character depth at the beginning with the two lead characters. Kate and Lisa were very much just the self explanatory shop worker and wife of popular solider, so it would have been nice if they had more of a depth to there characters when they were first introduced, and yes you could tell what the story was going to be and what was going to happen pretty much throughout but that didn&#39;t really matter to me as the film was so good. My next two positives would be the chemistry between the lead characters and the excellent character development. Despite both of the character butting heads for a large majority of the film, they still bounced off each other and worked as a great counterbalance of personalities that worked throughout. And when they eventually got together and slowly became closer it was lovely to see as both of them together strengthened the whole choir. And adding on from the previous point the films character development was fantastic. Lisa&#39;s relationship with her daughter was well explored as they struggled to connect when it was just them alone. And Kate&#39;s development of opening up to people about how much she was struggling with the death of her son was fantastically developed and was incredibly emotional. My final two positives would be the films fantastic soundtrack and inspiring themes. Wow what an uplifting soundtrack this film had. Whenever the choir performed and were really singing there hearts out it was incredibly emotional and captivating. Their singing wasn&#39;t perfect but it didn&#39;t need to be, it was the message behind their music that made the hairs on my arms go up. And the fantastic song in the final act consisting of the letters from their husbands was powerfully done. My final positive would be the films excellent themes of togetherness. This film really made you stop and think about everyone you love the most and how much they mean to you. All the wives needed each other and got through whatever tough situation together which made it easier for a lot of them and I think that&#39;s a great message to spread to society today. Overall Military wifes, is a powerful, uplifting and inspiring movie. That will bring people together in the best way. It wasn&#39;t perfect but it didn&#39;t need to be that&#39;s what it so charming.

In this comedy drama film directed by Peter Cattaneo (The Full Monty, The Rocker) and written by Rosanne Flynn (The Favourite, The Bourne Supremacy) and Rachel Tunnard (Kill Kill Faster Faster, Adult Life Skills), Kristin Scott Thomas (Four Weddings and a Funeral, The English Patient) and Sharon Horgan (Game Night, Pulling) take the starring roles as Kate and Lisa respectively. Kate is the wife of the Colonel and following the death of her son in combat and her husband about to deploy once more, decides to help Lisa with the activities for the women on base. Lisa has a complicated relationship with her teenage daughter and the last thing she needs is Kate muscling in on her role and here-in lies most of the tension between the unlikely pairing. Lisa knows the women use the group to have a boozy time and let off steam and Kate may put an end to all that. At the next meeting of the wives, suggestions are requested for new activities and once the knitting club has been disbanded as a bad idea (none of them can knit) the suggestion of a singing club, by new military wife Sarah (Amy James-Kelly: Jericho, Safe) leads to the uneasy formation of a choir. Kate and Lisa are understandably not well matched to be running any activity together, let alone a choir but after a rough start come to compromise and when the top brass get to hear how well they are sounding, the choir is invited to sing at the upcoming Concert of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall. Will this mismatch of unprofessional singers led by a pair of bickering choirmasters pull it together enough to put on a great performance at such a prestigious venue or will it all end in tears? The film is loosely based on the true story of the Military Wives choir, the one set up in 2010, and deals sensitively with issues such as grief, social and family conflict, fear and loneliness with the added benefit of joy thrown in. Knowing this is based on truths, you come to understand, empathise and sympathise with the characters. For example I went from thinking that an annoying Kate is interfering in Lisa&#39;s role (when she had been doing a perfectly good job up to this point) to realising that she needs it just as much as any other woman there. From cringing at Kate&#39;s efforts to teach the wives how to sing using her old school classical teaching and empathising with Lisa&#39;s insistence on trying to make the activity fun by injecting modern songs rather than sticking to scales, I came to realise that the combination of both is what the wives responded to, realising that no-one fully knows what they are doing, especially in a stressful situation such as when your loved ones are in danger. Compromise and understanding is what was required and this is a message much needed in recent times, to try and look beyond a person&#39;s projection of who they want you to think they are to the real person underneath and what they might be going through. As our much loved and missed local MP Jo Cox said, &quot;We are for more united and have far more in common with each other than things that divide us.&quot; I never watched the TV programme with Choirmaster Gareth Malone, but as this is not referenced in the film, it didn&#39;t matter. In fact, I think that never having heard the song the choir perform (or at least, remember hearing it), when the song is unveiled during the performance the significance of the lyrics underlines it with an even more emotionally powered punch. With excellent performances throughout out from all the actors, not just the leads, particular stand-outs were Amy James-Kelly (as previously mentioned), Jason Flemyng (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) as Crooks, the only authoritarian male who stays on base who goes from putting on ear defenders to drown out the noise to their staunchest defender, Lara Rossi (Robin Hood, You (Us) Me) who plays Ruby the only wife of a female in the regiment who cannot sing a note to save her life and the choirs superstar singer Maz (Laura Checkley: King Gary, Action Team) who has to be convinced to sing in front of an audience at all, this is a feel-good film. But be warned, take some tissues along too.

A brilliant balance between the sad and uplifting with wonderful acting and great singing. Paints the picture of the life of families who have a partner away on a military tour and the balance of how the military expects wives to behave and what they are expected to do. I loved it as I love lots of these slice of life movies - Fisherman&#39;s Friends,The Full Monty, Brassed Off and always great to see the real people at the end of it. The final song is wonderful and absolute joy to listen to and ties up the movie finale brilliantly.

I really enjoyed this movie.
A feel good film with likeable characters and based on a true story. In my opinion it&#39;s more of a chick flick.
