In an otherwise atypical third world horror, and a story that has been told as many as horror film has been made.
I eventually made myself (forced myself, precisely) to watch this so-called Impetigore last night. And man! Not only did it fail to amaze me in any effing way, I felt nothing. Plainly flat. I felt nothing throughout the film. Not even a slightest bit of a sympathy and "the awe" to the characters nor its story. There's nothing new about the premise: a silly curse that need to be broken by a girl who tries to find out about her estranged family. I found this story not too interesting to follow-there are better narrated stories out there which have successfully made me 'curious, exasperated, grumpy & shocked' once at a time from the start to the end of em; such as Oldeuboi (2003), Ang-ma-reul bo-at-da/ I Saw the Devil (2010), for instance. I tried to seek for such experience I mentioned beforehand, but unfortunately I didn't find any from this flick. I don't know, it could be either the poorly-written script or the narration and/or the annoying cuts/editing. It's just that it failed miserably to amaze me. If only this movie was done differently, it would have been goodish.
Nevertheless, Impetigore is surely enjoyable. Yet it's extremely tedious and forgettable-except the legendary CHRISTINE HAKIM, who I think IS THE ONLY BEST THING OF THIS MOVIE. Ironically, Satan's Slave (2017), The Wailing (2016) are way more entertaining. Oh, wait a sec. Pengabdi Setan is still mediocre to me. Janji Joni (2005) is good. Yeah. Way better, to be honest.
After all, I blamed myself for I might have expected too high. I give this flick a D+. And oh, if I had to give, I'd rate this 3 stars, for it has saved by Christine Hakim's picturesque performance.

Western critics have lost their minds. I cannot believe this piece of garbage received a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. I guess you cannot trust critics' scores nowadays anymore because anything that is remotely decent from a minority movie-maker gets raving reviews from the critics.
Storyline: 3/10. The story is nothing original. A woman travels to a village to unravel mysteries about her past, unknowingly putting herself in danger. I have resigned myself to the fact that horror movies these days are rarely novel, so I only hope that a horror movie can do the tropes right. This movie cannot even pull that off.
The storyline is forced and unnatural. The so-called twist is ridiculous. Characters make incomprehensibly stupid actions contradicting their previous beliefs just so that the plot can move forward.
Direction: 4/10. I'm being generous with a 4. The jumpscares are so predictable that I almost laugh. The movie just recycles many typical Asian horror tactics, like oh-it-is-just-a-joke scare and loud noises when there is nothing happening. Sometimes you get a meaningless zoom into a random object like a bathtub. You'd think something scary happened in the bathtub but nope, the director just wanted to throw that in there because he could. The ending is so cheesy that I broke into laughter.
I'm giving him some kudos because he found a good setting.
Characters: 1/10. One-dimensional characters who are so stupid that you want them all to die.
Soundtrack: 1/10. Nothing special about it.
Enjoyment: 3/10. It was hilarious in some parts, so I guess it was entertaining.

Honestly, virtually nothing happens for the first hour, and the rest of the film is so mediocre with weak plot, it is NOT at all gory as some of the hype says, its a 15 cert at best in the western world, not at all creepy, and just tiresomely boring.
If you are an avid horror fan this is an absolute miss, if you are out for gore blood etc, its an absolute miss, if you want a different mythology type horror story thats a little different showing a different culture, then its a maybe but dont expect much.
I am not a torture p--n person or into heavy violence etc but have seen all the usual saw/hostel etc films, this is very very very mild in comparrison if thats what youre looking for and sadly doesnt have much plot so this does not deserve the "horror" classification Very dissapointing.
