    Stolen from The Alienist

If you liked the Alienist, you will also like this - it could literally be one of the weaker episodes. If you haven't seen that, she must this is set in late (?) 1800's England. Miss Scarlet wants to become a private detective like her father. She's bright but not encouraged due to the times. However her father dies and she pushes herself into some cases. The story is pretty straightforward and the acting just OK. I'm hoping they didn't start off with their best material

    A very good debut episode.

When her father passes away suddenly, Eliza Scarlett had a big decision to make, whether to go under, or continue with her father's Detective business.

It's a fine first episode, a very good start, it sets the scene and introduces the characters very well, it also has a killer performance from Aidan McArdle.

It's a gorgeous looking production, that's the net element, it looks spellbinding, terrific sets and exquisite costumes, some of Eliza's outfits are incredible.

If you're a fan of Sherlock Holmes, The Rivals and such like, I am sure you will enjoy this, it has that flavour, a gaslit Victorian London, a murky mystery, the only difference is that the rules are broken, and we have a female Detective.

Kate Phillips really is quite something as the lead character, great performance, not only is Miss Scarlett bright and tough, but she is.

    8/10.

The Extraordinary Miss Scarlet and some ordinary men..

Eliza Scarlet is a female detective. Miss Scarlet is a woman detective. Eliza is a lady detective. We get it. Victorian London is not London 2021. Eliza is likeable, her chemistry and banter with Detective Inspector William is good, the brothel owner Moses has charisma and the other cast is ok. I even liked the way the show looks. Problem is it follows the same stale formula: Eliza is amazingly amazing. Her Dad was a financially irresponsible drunk. The other men are of poor character, ordinary, or goofy. One man does outsmart Eliza and it would have made for an intriguing plot over a few episodes, but nope! Eliza gets it sorted out in no time flat. Inspector William naturally needs Eliza to figure out a simple murder case. How did this simpleton ever become a London Inspector? Like Dr. House or Sherlock Holmes, Eliza has great instincts, brilliant insight and eccentric thinking. It's a shame the show didn't focus on a great detective who happens to be a woman instead of showing us she's the greatest because she's a woman. While I liked the first outing, I have no interest in it beyond that.

    • Trivia
SS Princess Alice was a passenger paddle steamer that sank on 3 Sep 1878 after a collision with the collier Bywell Castle on the River Thames. Between 600 and 700 people died, all from Princess Alice, the greatest loss of life of any British inland waterway shipping accident. No passenger list or headcount was made, so the exact figure of those who died has never been known.
    • Goofs
The only time Eliza is seen in mourning for her father is at his funeral. In Victorian times, she would have worn mourning weeds for twelve months after her father's death. It would have been considered incredibly disrespectful to her father and bad luck not to wear mourning weeds. She would likely have been rejected from polite society for such behavior.
    • Quotes

William 'The Duke' Wellington: Being a Detective is a job for a man, Eliza.

Eliza Scarlet: And yet you do it every day, William.
