  • Five rounds of an uneventful fight.

    Hear me out:

The acting is obviously strong considering the hype around this film. The story is well crafted, light hearted and funny. The strong aspects however don't pack enough of a punch for a KO. It's barely a stumble blow. One can't help but feel a little bored and this pops up at around the half way point. There's still two and a half rounds of dancing with feather fists to go.

In the end it's a good watch and a recommendation to do so however the need for a second viewing seems unnecessary. There's nothing to unpack or analyze to death. Straight forward solid acting in a fairly interesting setting with fairly engaging side characters.

    The end.

  • In camera effects, well worth the watch.

    So hear out...

The writing has these moments of solid gold interjected with sloppy brown. At times it feels like a guilty pleasure and then it's just a genuine pleasure.

These strange character dynamics are mirrored with this odd family residential building. IT doesn't make sense, other than thematically, visually it seems unbelievable. However still a cool watch. Why?

Top reason: The in camera effects. They are plentiful and well executed. You can have a fun time trying to figure out just how they did it because it's a whole bunch of literal smoke and mirrors.

The acting, for the most part, is committed to the bonkers story. The main family is a superb cast.

The practical effects and makeup are awesome. Even the goofy aspects still carry a highly entertaining value.

Guilty pleasure this may be but a pleasure nonetheless.

  • When great acting keeps one eating it up...

    ...it really did.

I was hooked. The intensity of committing to the moment from each actor was easy to gobble up with a knife and fork. Sopping up the sauce off the plate with bread. Only to realize you've been eating garbage. And you're left feeling gross and hungry.

Once this film starts to go off the rails it alas doesn't do it fiercely and forcefully rather taking it's time to crash and burn in slow motion.

Perhaps a tightened edit in the end would have assisted. Maybe. But the main character is terrible. Like just a rotten waste of a main character to follow down into a pit of hell. One keeps hoping for a turnaround moment but it never really lands.

    Hard swing and a miss.
