We took our grandkids yesterday - 6 and 9 - and we all loved this story in a story, a traditional retelling of the life of Jesus as told by Charles Dickens to his son. Our six-year-old was so moved by the resurrection that she bowed on her face in worship. The storytellers did a good job of weaving together representative moments from the gospels to keep the story moving and yet contained within the hour and forty minutes allotted. It captured well the very essence of who Jesus is as the Son of God and God in the flesh and what He came to earth to do to redeem us from our sins. Great conversations after. An opportunity not to be missed by Christian families.
I really want to like this show. It is an IMPORTANT topic that deserves attention. The scenery is beautiful. I am enjoying the opportunity to learn about Alaska - if indeed the show is authentic in this regard. But the dialog is unnatural, the acting stilted, almost across the board. I get it that Eileen Fitzgerald is not supposed to be a likable character, and I confess I have not previously sampled much of Hilary Swank's work, but based on her performance in this pilot episode, I don't understand why she has been so highly lauded. I don't buy into her emotion in her little tirade about the irony of being canceled for being a misogynist. I know that sometimes pilot episodes have some weaknesses that get worked out. I'll give the next episode a shot and hope it doesn't rub me the wrong way.
This movie is just off. It misses the mark on film noir; it's not a spoof, but it's too bad to be called an homage. Every line is a cliche. The pacing is slow. The accents are awful, especially Brendan Frazier. This has got to be the worst performance Morgan Freeman, Famke Jannsen, Robert Patrick, Peter Stomare, Brendan Frazier, even John Travolta have ever turned in. John Travolta looks like a caveman. The whole thing is laughable.
