I was born in Cambridge on St. Valentine's Day 1959 and became seriously interested in films at the age of 12. My favourite eras are the early 30's and the early 60's. Having regularly consulted the IMDb for over ten years I belatedly started posting reviews of my own for two reasons:

1. Plenty of the movies I see are so obscure it eventually dawned upon me that I really ought to describe some of them for the benefit of other researchers.

2. Having hit the age of 60 I can tell that my recall of films I've just seen is developing a shorter and shorter half-life; and as mortality beckons feel that it will from now on be wise to set down any impressions worth recording fairly promptly.

  • Grandpa's Little Dividend

Hailing from the days when sequels had new titles rather just sticking 'II'. Spencer Tracy - along with wife Joan Bennett and a radiant young Elizabeth Taylor - returns to play the harassed father in this sequel to 'Father of the Pride' that it was actually quickly dashed off during a pause in the filming of 'An American in Paris'.

  • Gold Rush Deanna

This adaptation of an original by Jerome Kern representing Deana Durbin's only film in Technicolor - as well as her sole western - was probably her most ambitious and certainly her most expensive; but far from her best. Presenting a more glamorous Deanna - in heavy makeup up and sporting red curls - this was probably a makeover too far.

  • The Woman in the Cerise Swimsuit

Buster Keaton recalled in his memoirs that he was employed to supply gags for Red Skeleton for a film starring Esther Williams that he called 'Swimming Beauty'.

From her first appearance limbering up on a diving board it was immediately obvious that Miss Williams and Technicolor belonged together; while the film's biggest single surprise has to be the presence of Basil Rathbone as Skeleton's scheming manager.
