What a wonderfully portrayed glimpse of joy in some of life's greatest trials. Packaged in some of the most engaging scenery. So real in so many ways. I haven't enjoyed a movie so thoroughly in a long time. Thanks to all those involved! (INSERT APPLAUSE HERE).
Seriously, but realistically flawed people seem to be hard to capture, but the script, actors, and direction manage it so well.
Although it doesn't push to be an overly "Christmas" movie, it still brought so many of the special (and bittersweet) notes of the season. I think it could easily conjure up a bit of balsam and mistletoe mid summer...

It takes a lot to make George and Julia unlikable, but this movie succeeds. The supporting cast are so much more interesting that I found myself hoping for ac sequel so they could bring the island and it's people and culture more into focus.
The acting is great and the scenery is fantastic, but the script never seems to make its case that the two parents are more than miserable cynics who can only have fun when they're drunk. Granted, that's probably a realistic premise, but it doesn't work for this movie.
Too much reliance on star power, not enough character development beyond the headliners.

Honestly, how do these movies get made? If you love community theatre, go see that instead. Poor performances, low production value, and terrible script.
