I was that kid in 1984, and my parents took me to watch it at the theatre, and I thought it was the most wonderful movie ever. Of course 40 years down the line I realise it's average at best, with more holes in the plot than a swiss cheese, silly moments, over the top performances by big names just there to cash the check, and dated FX...That said, all of that disappears when you have a look at Helen Slater as Supergirl (not Kara or Linda). She's the most gorgeous thing I had ever seen at nine. Not sexually attractive. Just beautiful. And she carries the movie with a confidence that equals Christopher Reeve's as "her cousin". She was my first crush and still is.
And the FX, dated though they are 40 years later, are probably the best of that early Superman era franchise. Yes, you have to be a kid in 1984 to enjoy it. Which I still am.
