The Substance is one of those movies that you initially want to watch when there's simply nothing better to do. You think Demi Moore just made the movie to keep her Actors Guild membership active, or from some contractual obligation. You think it's going to be some corny b-movie horror or whatever. You don't think much of the movie in of itself.
Well, let me tell you this, after watching it, I'm calling The Substance is one of the best movies I've ever seen.
I won't go into any detail. Demi Moore played her role with utmost skill. The director and editor created shock where shock had no business being. At some points, you'll feel offset, creeped out, especially towards the end. It's not a traditional horror, but some of the images are horrific , especially when you absorb the message the movie was trying to convey. I won't discuss the plot. I'll just say this. Watch this movie will full understanding that symbolism will be leaned on, heavily, especially at the end. Watch it not for the nudity or for any crude considerations; but instead understand why that nudity was depicted and understand why your opinions on crudeness supported the intension of the movie itself. If you watch The Substance with the correct mindset, and allow your mind to explore what the movie was trying to do, you'll enjoy it. And the shocking images, invasive closeups, and satire won't go to waste at all.
7/10- one of the better movies out there, if you understand its intent.

Typical Bay move here; slow motion shots, lots of action, lots of explosion, pumping up of law enforcement/military, lots of gunshots, sexy eye candy, comic relief black guy, suspenseful moments and heroism out the kazu. There were plenty of things that didn't make sense about Ambulance. The character motivations were unbalanced. The comedy was delivered at the wrong times. The shot cop sure made a quick recovery after being on death's doorstep for an incredible long time. And I'm still not understanding why the cops didn't use spike strips, or any of the many ways vehicles are blocked or disabled. But as I said, great movie, just don't overthink it.
Not sure why this underperformed. I'm calling it one of the funnest (not the best, funnest, if that's even a word) movies I've seen for some time.
8/10- If you like M. Bay movies, you'll like this one.

Saint Maud is one of those movies that will only appeal to those who are willing to appreciate it. Now, that my sound a bit snobby, but I back my opinion up by reading the IMDB reviews of this movie. People either like it and understand its intent, or dislike it, not absorbing what it was trying to do.
I am not going to go over all aspects of this movie; it's quite old and often reviewed. I will say that for those of us who like our horror manufactured in the mind and not at the end of a machete, you should enjoy Saint Maud, as, to me, it ranks right of there close to The Babadook and Hereditary.
And like Saint Maud, you'll either appreciate my review or you won't. Regardless, Saint Maud is brilliantly acted, shot, written, and directed, so give it a try.
8/10 - one of the best in this genre.
