Fills in a bunch of obvious gaps in the beginning of the series. It shows the activities of brother Cavill. Both brothers Cavill. One of them evil, one of them good.
It also follows the story of a small character, Giana, who was Edward James Olmos third wife. She appears in the miniseries I don't know if she ever appeared in the show proper.
Also the activities of Anders and the C-Bucks, they witnessed some horrendous things.
We wonder if the Cavill that was on Galactica knew anything about the five despite how much he spoke against knowing who they were, he seemed to know about Tyro.
Boomer was basically driven insane because of Cavill, who was cruel to both human and cylon alike.
Despite how "unnecessary" this little "episode" was, it is worthwhile to watch this little Interlude. It explains a lot of things.

Mostly the mystery of the opera house "visions" (or projections) is nailed shut.
It makes you wonder, where these visions came from. They started on Kobol when it was just Baltar and his Six-shaped "angel", but over the course of the series other people than Six and Baltar became involved. Athena. Roslin. Even Hera.
The Five, they needed to be gathered together on the balcony of the Opera House, and that is exactly where they were.
And also because Baltar was with his real Six that he had known since the beginning of the series, you have to wonder if she had been seeing this vision/projection as well.
And then, without Starbuck, the conundrum of the music would not have been answered. And without Boomer, Hera would not have been saved.
Even Racetrack and Skulls played an important part that went beyond even their own lives.
I had originally seen the three individual episodes of this finale but lately I have been watching the extended cut that combines all three episodes into one, that version gives us a more detailed answer.
At first, I thought that Roslins "Visions" were separate from the projections we were shown from various Cylons and/or "Angels", even Starbuck interacted with an angel that looked like Leoben. Both humans and cylons participated in these visions/projections. Ironically, various people misinterpreted the Opera House vision, especially Athena, who shot the wrong Six over it.
It was just clever writing from the beginning, they knew where they were going to bring this series and they stuck to it.
Even at the beginning of the miniseries that started this whole thing, they show us an image of "the colony", (it may have been "the plan"). So in a way the whole show goes full circle from beginning to end, it starts and finishes at the same place.

Or a vision, I don't know if this episode was telling us that the cylon's ability to project is now being bestowed to humans.
But, seeing that Roslin continues to see the projection of the Opera House, which is shared by Six and Athena, that might be what this means.
The projection thing started all the way back in the miniseries, with Baltar and his "angel", later we saw Caprica Six start seeing the same angel, or the Baltar version of it.
And then, when Roslyn started taking the drug, she started seeing visions, but they could have been projections... the prophetess that was visited by D'Anna took the same drug and was able to project onto D'anna.
Even Boomer and Hera shared a projection.
So whether it was cylon projection or basic human drug induced visions, they appeared to be the same thing and in this episode, Roslin shares it with another human. Nana Visitor.
Meanwhile, Starbucks and Athena visit the blown up base star.
Even as the humans and the cylon's try to cooperate, they are still making mistakes. But they keep trying.
