The real reason this movie is great is because it aged so perfectly well. The director's intent was always to transport you to Baltimore of 1963 and it does it so with a style. There are great shots of the city and beautiful cars, but even beyond that, the vocabulary, the dialog, the pastimes - it is all there . Actors' performance is impeccable, and seeing DaVito in this role is just a treat. So the story flows and you may think it would lead you to a certain outcome, but Levinson is an accomplished master of story telling so you're never quite right. This movie is a gem, highly recommend it.
I love Airplane!, Mel Brooks films, and some other slapstick movies which may be considered somewhat low-brow. The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad, however, left me completely unimpressed. As a matter of fact, I was bored most of the time, and I can't remember what this movie was about, which is not a good sign. Perhaps the movie didn't age well, or maybe it's lacking coherence and well-developed story, or maybe it's just not funny. Acting is convincing and the camera work is done very well. But still, having watched it, I immediately regretted wasting my time on it. I don't recommend watching this movie.
I am infinity surprised this movie gets good ratings. The plot is mediocre at best, the pace is drawn out and slow, but most importantly, it's sooo boring. After you watch it for 10 minutes you already know how it ends, and if you are expecting great acting, clever dialog, or visually interesting images you will be utterly disappointed, like I was. There are maybe two or so somewhat interesting scenes but that's about all. Also, the actors play their roles as if they don't care, and they really don't. I consider time spent to watch this movie to be a total waste. It's very clear that the purpose for making this film was never to produce a work of art, but instead the goal seems to be to create a product an average consumer would buy. Pretty sad, in my opinion. I don't recommend watching this movie.
