  • Style over substance

Firstly, as much as I agree with some of the more negative reviews of this movie I don't think that it deserves a review bombing level rating. The main criticisms that landed well were related to the comical nature of the horror scenes. Deep Red's higher than normal rating only makes Argento's other movies look under-appreciated to me.

Secondly, Deep Red left me wondering if it should be considered a horror movie at all, the only horror in the whole movie was done with a dumby which was actually pretty good. What I'm talking about is the part towards the end with the dumby runs across a room towards the protagonist. I'm pretty sure it was the least liked part of the movie by the many who voted the movie up as most people tend to vote movies down just for being too scary. Alas something Deep Red isn't guilty of.

Finally, if you are willing to look past the abrupt musical scores, poor plot, and simplistic crime story you'll find a boat load of style and good directing trying to compensate for a movie that will have you wondering how anyone in their right mind could believe half of what they are looking at. It fits in well with many other ludicrous horrors for its time that were prematurely hailed as greats but thanks to the many better horrors since we can look past these odd ball flicks in experimental cinema and understand that these movies weren't ever made for horror movie buffs to begin with. Deep Red is simply a Giallo Thriller that's not as terrible as some harsher critics would have you believe. Deep Red isn't a horror it isn't a master piece Giallo, its just another Dario Argento Thriller that has a lot of style.

  • Felt more like an episode than a movie

The main reasons I think 28 Years seemed disappointing was because of the lack of character development and back story. To this I mean that it would have been more enjoyable as part of a larger tv series where these things could have already been covered in previous episodes and this episode that makes up the movie would have made much more sense and been a lot more interesting. However this obviously isn't the case and as such I don't think it deserves the high ratings it got because it is a movie not a tv show episode and thus needed to be delivered more as a movie.

28 Years is not a good movie and has a terrible and nonsensical ending which only made it harder for me to take seriously. My one word rating would be Lame.

  • Lame and goofy

It's hard to believe the budget for this movie after you've watched it, to say that it hasn't aged well definitely gave me a good belly laugh out loud. No, its certainly has not aged well at all.

In fact Damnation Alley is so poor I struggled most of the time to watch it without finding something else to think about or do. The plot seems good on the face of it but it the comical execution makes it so tedious.

A group of survivors from a self destructive military base head off into the desert to play some poker machines, encounter some laughable armor plated cockroaches and later meet some radioactive hillbillies.

Points for the casting though and the occasional fiery explosion. The flood scene was pretty cool too.
