Huge app updates come to Apple’s OS
macOS Monterey is a free major release of macOS—Apple's desktop operating system for Macintosh computers. This utility software is the 18th version and is the successor to macOS Big Sur, making it macOS 12.0 in terms of the new numbering system.
Similar to Windows 11, macOS Monterey introduces various new optimizations for the OS’ functionalities, such as FaceTime’s widened capabilities and the Messages app being even more streamlined. It also offers new features for better security and work productivity. However, like its predecessor, it drops support for older Mac computer models released between 2013 and 2015.
Which Macs will run Monterey?
Just like macOS Big Sur, macOS Monterey places emphasis on feature updates—improving upon what you already have so they’re of better help to you. For one, the FaceTime app gets a huge overhaul with SharePlay, which allows you to watch streams with friends and family no matter the distance. It also includes a cool spatial audio feature, Voice Isolation to block background noises, and better grid view displays.
The AirPlay feature can be used on Mac computers now and lets you either cast your video or audio from your mobile device. The Messages app is given more improvements, too—with the organized media feature, “Shared with You” and multiple photos appearing as collages. Safari now allows tab groups and Intelligent Tracking Prevention for IP address security. Meanwhile, Focus can automatically filter out notifications to keep things quiet.
There are new apps and features, as well, like Quick Note and Shortcuts to help keep you on top of things. Universal Control lets your keyboard and mouse interact seamlessly across multiple synced devices. However, in terms of this, this version doesn’t support models released from 2013 to 2015 anymore. It’s currently compatible with MacBook, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, Mac Mini, iMac, iMac Pro, and Mac Pro.

All in all, macOS Monterey is a great update to your operating system if you’re looking for more functionality with your existing features and some new content. Not only does it optimize live-streaming and screencasting, but you have new apps to expand your productivity tools. While its scope of support for Mac devices has lessened, it still gives out lots of pretty useful updates.
