Common questions
How is this different from Cloudron or PikaPods?
Those are multi-tenant platforms where your apps share infrastructure with other users. Malmo gives you a complete virtual machine that is yours alone. That means you can export the whole thing and run it on your own hardware, because the cloud artifact and the bare-metal artifact are the same. No other hosted self-hosting platform can honestly promise that.
What does "export" actually mean?
One click produces a portable bundle: your user data, your installed app manifests, and the control-plane database. It's a tarball, not a proprietary backup format. Restore it on any machine running Malmo such as a mini PC, a VPS you rent directly, or a colo box you own.
Can I really move to my own hardware?
Yes. The cloud build and the bare-metal build share the same architecture. The export path allows you to move your data and apps at any moment.
Is my data safe on a server I don't physically own?
Your server is a dedicated VPS running in a European datacenter (Hetzner), the same infrastructure trusted by thousands of businesses. It's yours alone, not shared with other tenants. We never log into your box or touch your data; we keep the machine running and stay out of what's on it. And because the whole stack is portable, you're never stuck: move it to your own hardware whenever you want.
What apps can I run?
The marketplace includes photo management (Immich), file sync (Nextcloud), password managers (Vaultwarden), note-taking, media servers, project tools, bookkeeping software, and more. The catalog is curated, not encyclopedic. New apps are added regularly.
How does Malmo make money?
We make money from the marketplace and from hosting, never from your data and never by locking you in. The OS is free and open source. Paid apps in the marketplace and optional hosting plans are how we fund development. The open, Android-not-iOS architecture is what keeps us honest: we have no way to wall you in, and no incentive to.
