Mounties and Huskies Play to Draw

The Mounties earned their first tie of the season last night against noted rival, Northwestern.  While the team continues to work on their intensity from the first whistle, the ladies improved as the game progressed winning 50/50 balls, getting the ball out wide, improving passes and making some nice runs on goal.  Keep it up ladies!!  :)

Soccer Season Preview-- Ashland Times Gazette

The TG put out their annual soccer preview today.
Here's what it had to day about the MOUNTIES!!

Mapleton
Mounties hope offseason work pays off
For the last year, Niki Taylor and her Mountie soccer players have been preparing for this season -- in the weight room and on the pitch.
"This is the first time the girls have basically conditioned, fitness and weight lifting, nearly year-round," Taylor said. "The girls are fit, strong and able to compete at a high level for all 80 minutes of the game."
Mapleton started a soccer program three years ago when the six seniors on this year's team were freshmen. Two of those include top returning scorers Hayley Krause (six goals, first-team all-area performer) and Sarah Cepero (five).
"These girls started the program and grew with the program," Taylor said. "We have seen improvement every year. The girls worked hard to develop this program and while it will be sad to see them go at the end of the season, I am so excited to see them play this season."
This is the Mounties first year in a conference, joining the United Independent Soccer Conference along with local squads Crestview and Loudonville.
"The conference looks tough but we are just ready to get out on the field and play. We have a tough schedule and we are taking it one game at a time," she said.
The Mounties hope the success in defense from last season will carry over this year while they continue to work on their offense. However, they will have to fill the key void left by graduated first-team all-area and all-district goalie Sam Esterline, who totaled 172 saves, eight shutouts and had an area-best 0.78 goals-against average in 2010.
"We had lots of shutouts, we defend very well," she said. "(But) we did not score a lot of goals overall, so we need to work on finishing."
The Mounties only have 14 girls on the field this season but Taylor said she believes her team still has the depth to win games.
"Our numbers are low so we are only 14 girls strong," she said. "But we are 14 strong-girls strong. Every member of the team is a quality player and can compete at a varsity level. We are very fit and have been working very hard on capitalizing on set plays."
n 2010: 9-8-1
n Returning letter winners: 10
n Key losses: Sam Esterline and Dreama Browning (due to injury)
nProjected forwards: Taylor Stalnaker (fr.); Shelbi Gregg (fr.);
nProjected midfielders: Taylor Krause (so.); Allison Frymier (jr.); Aubrey Edwards (sr.); Hayley Krause (sr.); Shelby Jordan (sr.); Sarah Cepero (sr.)
nProjected defenders: Jerrica Smith (so.); Taylor Dillard (sr.); Shelby Stokes (fr.); Sydney Wilder (so.); Kortney Haines (sr.);
nProjected goalie: Hannah Krause (fr.)
