How to Play Cat Sudoku

Learn the rules, make a safe first move, and keep the puzzle playable from the same page.

Cat sudoku is a logic puzzle inspired by the clear grid thinking of traditional sudoku, but MeowDoku does not ask you to fill a board with digits. Each puzzle gives you rows, columns, and colored regions. Your job is to place one cat in every row, every column, and every colored region. The board is solved only when all three rules agree at the same time. That makes sudoku with cats familiar to players who enjoy deduction puzzles while giving every decision a different visual clue.

Start by scanning a row or region with few open cells. A cat already placed in a row removes every other cell in that row and its column. It also removes the eight surrounding cells, because cats cannot touch horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. Use X marks to keep track of cells that are impossible, then look again at the remaining candidates. When a row, column, or colored region has one legal place left, you have a safe cat placement rather than a guess.

You can play sudoku with cats directly in your browser, with no download or account requirement to begin. Your progress stays in this browser unless you choose optional sign-in. Open the rules for a focused explanation, use the tips page when a pattern needs a second look, or browse the level library to compare a finished board with checked answer coordinates. The goal is a calm, logic-first puzzle: use the rules to narrow the board, place each kitty with confidence, and keep moving one clear constraint at a time.

01

One cat in every row and column

A completed board has exactly one cat in each horizontal row and each vertical column. Once a cat is fixed, every other cell on those two lines can be marked unavailable.

02

One cat in every colored region

Each colored area also contains exactly one cat. Small or narrow regions are useful starting points because they often have fewer legal cells.

03

Cats cannot touch

Cats may not share an edge or a corner. A placed cat therefore excludes all surrounding cells, including the four diagonal neighbors.

A calm way to play

Three constraints, one clear answer

Every board combines row, column, colored region, and no-touch constraints. Mark impossible cells first and place a cat only when the remaining position is forced.

  1. Mark the board

Cycle an empty square into a mark before committing to a cat.

  2. Place a cat

Only place when a row, column, region, and neighboring cells agree.

  3. Use a hint carefully

A hint reveals one safe direction while leaving the rest of the reasoning to you.

  4. Reset with context

Undo or restart keeps the board approachable when a trial needs reconsidering.

Start with the tightest region

Scan for regions with very few cells or several blocked lines. They reveal forced cats and create useful exclusions elsewhere.

Cross-check rows and columns

A cell can look open inside its region but still be impossible because its row or column already has a cat. Recheck all three memberships before placing.

Use diagonal pressure

A confirmed cat blocks the four corner-touching cells. Those diagonal exclusions often reduce a neighboring region to one legal position.
