22/7: A day of infamy we must never forget but returns

It is a creepy coincidence that during another 22/7 anniversary when a mass murderer in Norway killed in cold blood 77 victims in 2011, Finland, Sweden, and Denmark are ruled by governments that are hostile to people from outside the EU.

In Finland, we have two far-right terrorist investigations suspected of planning attacks against migrants.

The same language that the Norwegian killer used to justify his actions was used in Finland by Riika Purra, the Perussuomalaiset (PS)* finance minister and deputy prime minister, to denigrate migrants. Like the Norwegian killer, who warned about Muslims taking over Europe, Purra lashes out in her Scripta writings against Muslims, gays, the Romany minority, and Africans.

Apart from spitting on beggars, Purra threatened to use a gun on a commuter train to kill youths of migrant backgrounds.

Scripta is an Islamophobic, xenophobic, and homophobic blog written by Jussi Halla-aho, who was convicted in 2012 for ethnic agitation and for breaching the sanctity of religion and is the speaker of parliament.

Jos haluat esimerkin Suomen myötäsukaisesta ja hampaattomasta ulkopolitiikasta kansainvälistä kiusaajaa, kuten Yhdysvaltain presidenttiä Donald Trumpia, kohtaan, kuuntele puolustusministeri Antti Häkkänenn (kokoomus) lausuntoja. Ei pidä myöskään unohtaa ulkoministeri Elina Valtonenta (kokoomus), jonka sanat ja vakuuttelut ovat menettäneet uskottavuutensa.

Kysyttäessä Trumpin ja Netanjahun uhkauksista tuhota Iranin infrastruktuuria jos Hormuzin salmea ei avata, Häkkänen ei kertaakaan maininnut, että kyse olisi sotarikoksista.

– Kansainvälisessä oikeudessa on tietyt rajoitteet, ja he varmasti arvioivat, mitkä kohteet listalle otetaan seuraavaksi, hän totesi tuomitsematta Trumpin suunnitelmia.

Reaktio muistuttaa hämmästyttävän paljon Suomen hallituksen reaktiota Israelin sotarikoksiin Gazassa.

How to push back against the oppressors

As US President Donald Trump continues to go off the rails acting like a USAmerican Kim Jong Un, it’s clear that we must not only do everything to stop him but prevent Europe from taking the same route.

It’s sad but a reality that many people will die as a result of his power-starving appetite, which may instil fear in some but in others embolden.

With the recent attack and kidnapping of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and the saber-rattling at Iran, it’s clear that these acts of aggression, or imperialaims, will embolden people to fight back.

Opulence and injustice are deadly mixes.

We have many examples that show that we don’t need a modern army to beat an oppressor.


The list below is not complete of some who challenged a system and won with their bravery and suffering.

On the first of December 1955 Rosa Parks refused to give her seat on a bus to a white passenger. That moment of defiance was one of the sparks of the Civil Rights Movement.

Dedication and a love for freedom turned Harriet Tubman into ray of hope for many black slaves.

The Cuban Revolution is one of the best examples of being at the right place at the right time. It proved that you don’t need an army to defeat a large organized and corrupt army.

Even if Sacco and Vanzetti were falsely executed by the electric chair in 1927, they are still fondly rememberd. Their only crime was that they were anarchists. Their death led to protests around the world.

The October 17, 1945 demonstration, which freed Juan Domingo Perón from detention, showed a remarkable event where his charistmatic wife, Evita Perón, rallied the masses and changed history.

The White Rose movement did not end with the death the death of Sophie Scholl, Hans Scholl and Christoph Probst on the 22 February 1943, shortly after Hitler’s 6th Army had suffered a decisive defeat in Stalingrad. These brave activists dared to challenge the power of an autocratic regime by distributing anti-Nazi messages.

“El derecho de vivir en paz,” the right to live in peace, is one of folk singer’s Victor Jara’s most famous songs. He was brutally murdered by the military dictatorship and his songs censored. After the uprising against the Chilean government in 2019 when they raised the price of subway tickets, people started to sing Jara’s songs as a rallying cry for freedom and democracy.

Upton Sinclair impacted the US through his writing in books like The Jungle.

There are many, many more examples when the underdog beat the oppressor.

Migrant Tales (2016): Remember Jari Sillantie of the Kolari asylum reception center and coming out of the Islamophobic closet?

Migrant Tales context: In 2016, we reported about the terrible treatment of asylum seekers in the northern town of Kolari. Lapin Kansa, a Rovaniemi-based daily, got intereted in the story and helped the demontration to get national attention. One of the reasons why the demonstration was organized was against the asylum center’s deputy manager Jari Sillantie. One editor spoke to me later angered and questioned if Sillantie was a racist. The story below should answer that question. I believe that this demonstration was the first that caused the sacking of a manager.

I do, and very vividly. Jari Sillantie was the deputy manager of the northern Finland Kolari asylum reception center that sacked him after some 140 asylum seekers protested his management style.

Even if his management style and Facebook “likes” did not reveal his attraction to the Islamophobic Perussuomalaiset (PS)* party, they did speak volumes about his anti-immigration views (see picture below).

After all of the asylum seekers at the reception center demonstrated on May 4 and forced the Red Cross, which managed the reception center, Sillantie was sacked and deemed “unsuitable for the job.”

We learned more things about Sillantie: His heart is with the Islamophobic PS party, and he was convicted for tax fraud in 2018. He owes 666,000 euros in back taxes to the state.

Jari Sillantie, who was sacked as deputy manager of the Kolari asylum reception center in 2016, was not suited for the job. His “likes” on Facebook, which have now been deleted, are an assortment of far-right associations and politicians like Laura Huhtasaari.

Sillanpää is a good example of the hypocrisy of the PS. He states in his campaign message all the racist talking points of the party. Migrants should follow the law but Sillantie and the PS have special privileges.

Sillantie’s message comes in loud and clear in his campaign poster: Vote for Finns first!

Thanks to the asylum seekers of the former Kolari asylum reception center, the media, and our work, we were able to expose Sillantie for what he was: a questionable person who wanted to make the lives of asylum seekers as difficult as possible.

Weapon and ethno fascism on display at the Independence Day gala

The picture uploaded on Facebook at the Independence Day gala says it all about the far-right Perussuomalaiset (PS)* party: on the left MP Jenna Simula showing off her assaut weapon pin and on the right MP Sara Seppänen doing her cultural appropriation masquerade by impersonating a Saami.

Both MPs pose shamelessly: Simula glorifying a weapon and Seppänen masquerading as a Saami.

The picture tells volumes about the fantasies of the PS.

A big thank you to all the young people who joined us today 30.11, for the Youth Wellbeing Day at Kontula Youth Centre!

We had deep discussions on crucial topics: wellbeing and self-care.

It was wonderful to see the enthusiasm of the youth in sharing their thoughts and learning new things!

This event was part of the activities of Tieto on valtaa ry’s Solidarity Project (Solidaarisuus-hanke). The goal is to equip young people with tools for a better life.

The Finnish media says “Illegal” immigrant from Russia caught at railway station

One person from Russia crossed the border today and triggered a manhunt for the person. The information given by the Finnish Border Guards quoted in the media talks about a lone person who crossed the border and was apprehended in downtown Imatra, a border city.

We have skimpy information and do not know if the person’s nationality and if the person is seeking asylum.

There is no information in the Finnish Border Guards website.

Imagine one person crosses the Finnish-Russian border like today, which has been closed since the end of 2023, causing a manhunt with helicopters and the like. On top of this he is labeled by the media as an “Illegal.” The term “illegal” is misleading because it connotes criminality.

And to top it off, we get no information who the person is and, importantly, if the person is an asylum seeker.

The treatment by the media and the Finnish Border Guards of the story shows that there is little transparency on such matters. It is more like a kangaroo court accusing someone without being convicted.

The rule of law in Finland has taken another blow thanks to the pushback law passed in July 2024 by parliament.

Wille Rydman has a PhD – he (P)iles it (h)igh and (D)eep

Conidering that the present government has a far-right party among its ranks, the Perussuomalaiset (PS)*, Finland’s xenophobic atmosphere will get much worse before it retreats somewhat. PS MP Wille Rydman has had a long history about making racist remarks like his defense and spreading of the far-right great replacement theory.

Here is a quote by the late Toni Morrison that I dedicate, free of charge, to Rydman and others in his shameful league:

“[but] when you take it [racism] away, I take your race away, the only thing you got is your little [1.68 meters] self, and what is that? What are you without racism? Are you any good? Are you still strong? Still smart? Do you still like yourself? [If] you can only be tall because someone is on their knees, then you have a serious problem”

In a recent post, Rydman calls a study, which claims that Finland benefits from migrants in the country, as “bullshit.”

Bullshit?! Hmmm, what about taking a good long look in the mirror. Even your racist comments would blush in sham.

Politicians like Rydman can make and get away with racist statements because Parliament in general and his party in particular drip in racism. Most politicians are too scared to challenge such a social ill. Some even agree with characters like Rydman.

Even if Rydman is trying to feed us with an old stereotype that migrants live off welfare and don’t pay enough taxes, he – like the media and other politicians – forget to tell us that asylum seekers account for only 10% of all migrants.

Even so, Rydman and the lazy silence of the media generalize spreading his “PhD” knowledge on migrants and migration.

Kansanedustaja Sara Seppänen on feikki saamalainen

Muistatko Tanja Poutiaisen, joka pukeutui väärennettyyn saamelaispukuun ja aiheutti melkoisen kohun? Jostain oudosta syystä Lapin alueen asukkaat pitävät hyväksyttävänä naamioitua saamelaiseksi.

Yksi näistä henkilöistä on Perussuomaisten kansanedustaja Sara Seppänen. Kysyin saamelaiselta, mitä hän ajatteli Seppäsen tempusta.

Media, pääasiassa tabloidit, ovat hiljaa ja tukevat hiljaisuudellaan halveksuntaa saamelaisia ja muita vähemmistöjä kohtaan.

HUOMAUTUS: PS kansanedustaja Sara Seppänen EI ole saamelainen, parhaimmillaan hän on feikki saamelainen.

Miksi kulttuurinen omiminen on loukkaava ja väärin?

“Kun tarkastelemme sortoa kokevaa kulttuuria, se on usein seurausta kolonialismista, jossa hallitseva ryhmä on ottanut omistukseensa maan ja sen kansan. Kun hallitseva ryhmä jatkaa ei-hallitsevan kulttuurin osien varastamista, se jatkaa kyseisen kulttuurin taloudellista sortoa ja epäedullista asemaa,” ReachOut mukaan.

Kulttuurinen omiminen on myös vallan käytöä.

The UK’s minority home secretaries get tough on migration policy

Why are home secretaries of minority ethnic backgrounds pushing the most racist and radical immigration policies? Home Secretary Shabana Mahmoud follows in the footsteps of other dubious home secretaries like Sajid Javid (2018-19), Pritte Partal (2019-22), Suela Braveman (2022-23), and James Cleverly (2023-24).

All of the above have something in common: they hate migrants, especially asylum seekers.

In some respects, these home secretaries represent the role of the Ukrainians at Nazi concentration camps who did the dirty work, like terrorizing victims and sending them to the gas chambers. In the same way, these home secretaries want to make the lives of asylum seekers are difficult and painful as possible.

Some may believe that since it is a brown person adopting such a draconian migration policy, it must be ok. 
It’s not, but disgraceful.

If there is something we can learn from these ideological hard-right home secretaries masquerading as members of the Labor Party, ethnic background has little to do with your political views. The most important matter is your upbringing and what moral lessons forged you into a human being.

Mahmoud is a disgrace to her immigrant parents and their suffering.

Some see Denmark as an Islamophobic country on steroids. Mahmoud wants to adopt Denmark’s immigration policy in the UK.

Shameful.
