👻 Happy Halloween & Día de Muertos! Let's Talk About Your Inner Monster (It's Not Scary, Promise!) 🎃

Hey, brave souls! As the leaves blaze and the air gets that perfect, crispy chill, we’re standing right in the middle of the most magical time of year. Whether you’re saying “Trick or Treat?” (October 31st) or setting up marigold altars for Día de Muertos (November 2nd), this season has a secret invitation for you: to embrace your inner darkness.

Don't worry, we're not talking about anything under the bed! We're diving into the coolest, most liberating concept from the legendary shrink, Carl Jung: The Shadow.

Your Shadow Is Your Unlived Life

Jung taught us that the Shadow isn't a monster; it's simply the part of you you’ve locked away. Think of it as "the attic of the psyche."

From childhood, we learned to be "good," "polite," and "acceptable." Everything else—that sudden flash of rage, the urge to be totally selfish, the intense jealousy, or even a wildly untamed creativity—gets shoved into that forbidden drawer.

The Problem? What you repress doesn't disappear. It just gets stronger! It whispers, it lurks, and sometimes it erupts in unexpected ways:

  • The sweet person who suddenly unleashes whips of contempt.

  • The disciplined soul who only allows excesses on the weekend.

  • The immediate, fierce judgment you throw at someone else (that’s often your own flaw reflected back—a projection!).

💖 This Season Is Your Permission Slip to Be Whole

Our culture usually doesn't give us a healthy way to deal with this darkness. But this season is the blessed exception!

    • 🇲🇽 The Deep Healing of Día de Muertos: Look at the vibrant calaveras (sugar skulls)! Mexico doesn't deny the darkness (Death); it invites it to the party, adorns it with flowers, and makes it sweet and comforting. We dress as Catrinas and Catrines, acknowledging the inevitable with sacred lightness. It’s an act of profound psychic hygiene!

    • 🇺🇸 The Play of Halloween: It’s our annual chance to wear a costume and flirt with the mischievous! We get to embody archetypes—witches, monsters, villains—and give those usually hidden parts of ourselves a night out to play.

The goal is not to become "bad," but to become WHOLE. Integration means recognizing that your anger might be assertiveness waiting to be used healthily, and your selfishness might be healthy self-preservation.

Painting Your Shadow: A Final Invitation

Seeing your Shadow can bring immense healing. Learning to recognize it in our own reflection—to allow it its space without it becoming a harmful whip—is the first step to healing that unseen wound. The Shadow is not the enemy; it is the part of our Being that yearns for us to be whole.

In this spirit of playful integration, I've created a fun digital collage sheet of sugar skulls to celebrate our "happy Shadow" and encourage you to play with this energy. You can be inspired by this simple skull paper doll tutorial to give your own inner darkness a beautiful, dazzling costume or follow the next instructions!

✂️ Simple Instructions for Your Paper Sugar Skull Doll
    Materials You'll Need
    Easy Steps
    1. Prepare and Cut Out (The Integration)
    2. Basic Assembly (The Structure)
    3. Decoration and Personalization (The Expression)
    4. Presentation (Turning Up the Volume)

Creating a fun paper Catrina or Calaverita using Hands and Heart day of the dead digital collage sheet is a simple and playful way to "paint your Shadow" and celebrate the season.

    • Your Digital Collage Sheet (Printed on paper or cardstock, preferably matte for better color).  Go upwards, right click and download.

    • Scissors (or a craft knife/precision cutter if you prefer more detail).

    • Glue stick or liquid silicone glue (for attaching accessories and the body).

    • Optional: Wooden skewers or pipe cleaners (for mounting the doll to stand up).

    • Optional: Glitter, small faux flowers, or feathers (for extra decoration).

    • Cut the main pieces: Carefully separate the head (the skull), the torsos/dresses, and any accessories you want to use (flowers, hats, gloves, etc.) from your collage sheet and collage pieces of papers. (Find some freebies here! 🥳

    • Choose Your Shadow: Select the skull head that most attracts you or challenges you to decorate, and the dress or body you wish to use.

    • Glue the Body: Apply glue to the top of the chosen body/dress piece and attach the skull head. Make sure it's centered.

    • Reinforce (Optional): If you want the doll to be sturdier, glue the back of the body onto an extra piece of cardstock before cutting around the excess.

    • Add Accessories: Use the glue to place the flowers, hats, veils, or bows on the head. This is the moment for creativity!

    • Give It a Unique Touch: If you have glitter, use liquid glue to trace the eye sockets or skull patterns and sprinkle the glitter over them. If you have feathers or ribbons, glue them to the back or shoulders.

    • For Display: If you want the doll to stand upright, glue a wooden skewer or thick pipe cleaner to the back of the body (as a spine). You can then insert it into a base made of styrofoam or clay.

Dia de muertos 2017

"Altar"
Acrylics on 10" x 14" artist panel

At this time of the year, many altars are put to welcome tourists from
all over the world and is a feast for the eyes in museums, restaurants and
public places, I had a great time visiting a few!

In another tone, I though a lot about what it means to be Mexican
and how my culture influence me so deeply in how we perceive life
and death, we consider an after life as part of a cycle.  Although there is
no scientific proof that this is real, many people feel this to be true.

I am one of those, I like to believe, it brings hope, and encouragement,
it makes life an adventure and less scared of what is coming after it.

Los muertos se van al olvido,
aquellos que son amados viven en el corazón.

Por fin llegué al Chahuistle, lo conocí y comí en el! :D
(personal Joke)

I recently visited the city of Guanajuato and San Miguel de Allende
a true paradise for someone like me, beautiful houses, people, fresh
air, delicious food and a lot of art!  A feast for the artist so my muse
was very well fed and it promises to last for a while!

I also have been visiting museums in my city, and this post is about all of that,
I hope you enjoy my eclectic tastes and flavors, creations and thoughts! ;D

Que habita en el corazón?

Los latidos de la vida,
el potencial,
el querer seguir adelante,
el verbo vida
y la fuente fuerza,
la sangre y la serenidad,
la suficiencia del ser,
el poder de estar,
el yo soy.

Can you say time has found you?
Reach you?
Win over you?
Do you still have time?
Is time unfair?
All things vanish in time...
Time is money...
I never have the time to...
I wish I had the time to...

Our beliefs.

The view from were we stayed was superb so I had to take a
few moments to enjoy it and paint it, this time used watercolors
and pen, the last day was super cold!

This two color pages are for you to enjoy, simply right click
and download, print and color in your favorite mediums!

Mexico has many beautiful places yet to be discovered, it is my hope to
be able to travel more and visit them, embrace the knowledge hidden in
the faces of those who have lived a long life and learn more about the history
of the places that so commonly repeats.

It is also my hope to keep sharing with you.
Thank you for visiting! ;D

Altar de dia de muertos / Day of the dead altar in my studio

It is that time of the year again when the days are getting colder,
nice cozy sweaters and hot drinks, my favorites are, black vanilla tea with
a little milk and ponche for this season, it´s a traditional hot ponche made
with the fruits of the season, here is a recipe if you want to try it!  It´s
in Spanish so you´ll need the google translator!

So I decided to put my day of the dead altar this year, I usually don´t
´cause the purpose of it is to celebrate the dead and fortunately I still have
every loved one in my life, thank you God!  But I love this altars and so
I had fun putting it up, here is my wall of inspiration on Pinterest I used for it,
I hope you will enjoy it too as well as my process in how I did this!

I used styrofoam skulls from the craft store and painted them all withs
guess first and prepared a papier mache heart...

I had this piece of super strong cardboard and cuted the top
to make it curved, the studio of course
was super messy until finished! I also tried to used all I
already had and I didm´t buy anything
extra but every time I go to the craft store I get tons of
stuff for latter so when creativity strikes
I am super ready!

More guesso! :)
I love using it, I love the smell
and what it does!

How about some lights?  I would prefer some yellow but this is what I had!

Then I painted the skulls, this was super fun and I used inspiration form Pinterest!

I love that they look happy and no spooky at all! :)
Is it me or they move their eyes?  In every photo it looks like they
are looking at you, now that´s a little spooky!

I used one of my paintings, she reminds me of a vampire or
something like that so that´s why I picked her!

Hello!!  I worked hard but it´s finally coming together!

Voila! This is how it looks in the daylight!

"The fear of death is the most unjustified
of all fears, for there's no risk of accident
for someone who's dead."
--Albert Einstein

When the day approaches, November 2nd, I will add some fruit
and  the tradition day of the dead bread, my favorite!  for now,
it stays like that and will accompany me on my daily work at the studio!

And this is how it looks like at night!

So you see how simple it is to have fun? I used very simple
objects and I am super happy with how it turned out,
I hope you enjoyed! ;)

and a horizon is nothing save the limit of our sight."
