- Coterie, An Introduction, by Tara Aveilhe
Coterie was an important part of the inter-war literary and artistic scene in England. It emphasized modernist poetry but also published fiction, criticism, and art, under the editorship of Chaman Lall, who was still an Oxford University student of law when he founded the magazine. Lall was an Indian immigrant with an undergraduate degree from Balliol College, where he met Russell Green who assisted him and ultimately replaced him as editor of the last issue of the magazine and its successor, New Coterie. The American poet Conrad Aiken also contributed. Coterie published such writers as T. S. Eliot, Aldous Huxley, Amy Lowell, Richard Aldington, H. D., and Douglas Goldring. Visual artists included Edward Wadsworth, William Roberts, Henri Gaudier-Brzeska, André Derain, Amadeo Modigliani, Nina Hamnett, and Moise Kisling.
