My first encounter with programming was in my second year at the University of Nairobi. I picked up R for a statistics class, and it just grew on me. I found it elegant and beautiful. Then I became obsessed with writing programs. With that kind of passion, it didn't take me long to realize that I would do much better in Software Development than Actuarial Science (my major). So I made the switch, thanks to the internet and the power of self-learning.
I've spent a good chunk of my career timeline building software with R. In the very early days it was only simple R scripts. Later, those turned into R packages and interactive dashboards, most of which were internal. I'm now in my era of fully-fledged data applications, APIs, and the boring glue that keeps products running. All in R.
In all these years, one thing has remained constant: Fun. The thrill of writing programs is addicting. The high I get when people (programmers and non-programmers alike) find my software creations useful makes it a worthwhile addiction. But then again, aren't we all finding ways to justify our addictions?
