Carl Cleves - Tarab: Travels With My Guitar

Carl Cleves, singer, songwriter and guitarist was born in Mechelen, a traditional Flemish town in Belgium. Even as a child he would entertain his siblings and schoolmates with his vivid imagination. At 15 he was fronting his own band The Dragons and writing songs. His first recordings were made in Dusseldorf during one of his many escapes from student life, hitchhiking around Europe. In the mid 1960s he worked the folk clubs in London in the good company of Paul Simon, Al Stewart, Bert Jansch, Jackson C. Frank, Davey Graham and others, but instead of following a career path to musical fame like his contemporaries, Carl went travelling.

Carl's nomadic past results in highly original songs, which have won numerous awards in the categories of folk, world & roots, including two of the most coveted national Australian Music Awards (Music Oz and the Australian Songwriters Association). Ranging from polyrhythmic exuberance to intimate subtlety, the personal to the political, styles are interchanged and blended with great ease. Traces of Brazil, Africa, folk, blues and dance are the spice in the stew of Carl's songs. Approach and sound vary widely with each release but always with 'a complete lack of pretence and trendiness' (R. Jasituowicz, Diaspora World Beat). His pallet is as broad as life itself.

Tarab: Travels With My Guitar was released in 2008 and, although stated on the back insert as "this compilation of songs", it was an album of new recordings. The word "Tarab" means "a place where music and poetry bestow true bliss upon the lucky one" (as per liner notes).

Penguin Cafe Orchestra....Broadcasting From Home

The Penguin Cafe Orchestra (PCO) was an avant-pop band led by English guitarist Simon Jeffes. Co-founded with cellist Helen Liebmann, it toured extensively during the 1980s and 1990s. The band's sound is not easily categorized, having elements of exuberant folk music and a minimalist aesthetic occasionally reminiscent of composers such as Philip Glass.

The group recorded and performed for 24 years until Jeffes died of an inoperable brain tumour in 1997. Several members of the original group reunited for three concerts in 2007. Since then, five original members have continued to play concerts of PCO's music, initially as The Anteaters, then as The Orchestra That Fell to Earth. In 2009, Jeffes' son Arthur founded a successor band simply called Penguin Cafe.

Broadcasting From Home was released in 1984 and includes their most popular song "Music From A Found Harmonium".

The Vestibule (The Rotonda), (The Atrium), is the first section of the imperial corridor in Diocletian's Palace that led from the Peristyle which was once the formal entrance to the imperial apartments of the Palace.

It was built up to the beginning of the 4th century, as the original part of the ancient palace. It is a circular hall, once topped with a dome, 17 meters in height and 12 meters in diameter. Built as a grand meeting hall only for and selected audiences such as ambassadors. The entrance was adorned with a large door dimension of 2.56 x 3.96 ms with an abundance of relief decorations. The Vestibula area was cleared of four semicircular niches that were filled with statues of unknown deities. Southeast of the vestibule is the Medieval quarter, where the oldest building is the early Romanesque house from the 10th century.

The space is used by klapa groups to perform popular folk songs during the summer months, taking advantage of the acoustics for an a cappella performance.

Klezmer...Yiddish Swing Music...various artists compilation

Klezmer is a musical tradition of the Ashkenazi Jews of Eastern Europe. Played by professional musicians called klezmorim in ensembles known as kapelye, the genre originally consisted largely of dance tunes and instrumental display pieces for weddings and other celebrations. In the United States the genre evolved considerably as Yiddish-speaking Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe, who arrived between 1880 and 1924, came into contact with American jazz. During the initial years after the klezmer revival of the 1970's, the American sub-variety was what most people knew as klezmer, although in the 21st century musicians began paying more attention to the original pre-jazz traditions as revivalists including Josh Horowitz, Yale Strom and Bob Cohen have spent years doing field research in Eastern/Central Europe. Additionally, later immigrants from the Soviet Union, such as German Goldenshtayn, took their surviving repertoires to the United States and Israel in the 1980's.

Compared with most other European folk-music styles, little is known about the history of klezmer music, and much of what is said about it remains uncertain. There is, however, a heavy influence of Romani music, since many Jews and Roma lived side by side in Europe.

Madredeus...Faluas Do Tejo: Lisboa 2005...Portugese folk in purest form

In Faluas do Tejo, Madredeus presents a collection of songs about the city of Lisbon. The arrangements are mostly simple and folksy, showcasing Teresa Salguero's voice in its purest form.

"Lisboa, Rainha do Mar" opens the album with a light barcarole-sounding song that immediately conjures images of the Tagus river.

"Nevoas da Madrugada" carries a simple melody and light musical arrangement.

"O Cais Distante" is a moody, almost bluesy meditation.

"Na Estrada de Santiago" is a speak-sing number where Teresa sings a beautiful background melody that reinforces the power of her spoken parts.

"La de Fora" stands out as a happy, almost dance-able tune that has an alternating root-fifth bass line.

"O Canto do Saudade" finishes the album with a seaside, drink-in-hand feel that makes you want to start all the songs over again from the beginning. Notably, Teresa sings in a lower range for this song and you get to hear a different tone that is much more comfortable to the ear, especially if you don't like her very high parts.

Enjoy the virtual trip to Lisbon.
